Well Tip did become a military captain and get a PhD in a science. I’m not saying those things are usually attributed to men but… They are. Maybe Rebecca did too. We don’t know.
He introduced himself as Dr., and she didn’t. Rebecca definitely went on a different life path than our Tip (though I guess she kept the nickname). It could be because of the apocalypse, or it could be for another reason.
And (at the risk of degenerating this further) Oglaf the other day had a quote along the lines of ‘its not necrophilia if they are alive when you started’.
No, no. This is Rebecca Wilkin who states that Dennis Wilkin is her dad. Our “Tip” is Dennis Wilkin, so Rebecca is our Tip’s alternate-self’s daughter.
And in any case, she’s probably immune to Tip’s charms because, A) she’s effectively family, and B) she’s too young by the looks of it.
I don’t think Rebecca’s Dad is alt-Tip, since she said that if she were a boy they would have named her Dennis too. From Tip and Sweetheart’s reaction, more likely Tip is Dennis Jr. and Rebecca is Alt-Tip.
That is: In the main timeline, Dennis Wilkin and his wife had a son named Dennis, who is Tip.
In the alt timeline, Dennis Wilkin and his wife had a daughter named Rebecca.
This may be stretching things a bit, but I think Sweetheart is making a rather pointed observation that the parents of Tip/Rebecca are pretty much misogynist assholes who preferred a “manly” generic son and, both times, either got themselves a capable and intellectually superior daughter with outstanding post-apocalyptic survival skills that they didn’t appreciate or a brilliant and capable son who just happens to have a laser shop sense of feminine fashion and a level of narcissism that would astound Narcissus. And that didn’t appreciate that either. But the question remains: in the Universe we know, were the Wilkins all fashion-aware? And in this Universe, are they merely schlubs who buy straight off the rack?
Yes, minority does not equal liberal….. I can’t cite chapter and verse, but I remember Sweetheart coming out with remarks like this before. While Nick happily throws transphobia into his “insult everyone all the time” shtick, it gets my back up more when Sweetheart does it. I suspect that due to her conservative worldview she actually does disapprove of Tip’s sexuality.
Well, the difference is Nick is rude to EVERYONE and doesn’t mean anything by it while Sweetheart is usually polite and really IS kind of homophobic and racist. At least she’s trying to get over it?
Yeah, Nick’s “mostly” an equal opportunity insulter. However, I would assert that he feels threatened by Tip, because Tip can pretty much get any female into bed he wants to, even though Tip dresses like a “chick” (from Nick’s perspective), whereas Nick doesn’t even have the “equipment” for that any more, but obviously still has the mental/emotional inclination in that direction (Virginia). This tends to result in Nick tending to insult Tip more/more often than he insults others.
Tip seems a little uncertain about it in the filename story:
“He’d only started being Tippi recently, and mostly in his head, and it occurred to him that this might not be the best opportunity to break out the new name. It’d be a heck of a thing to get kicked out for saying the wrong thing just before the final test.
Besides, he wasn’t sure about the name. He wasn’t sure about being a woman. He wasn’t sure about being a man, either, which was the whole problem. There was only one thing he could be sure about, which was that he looked fantastic. He clung to that sole certainty like a man, or possibly a woman, clutching a rock in a storm.”
That’s before Tip started working at Skin Horse, though, so Tip might have settled on a gender identity in the meantime.
In that case, Sweetheart is deliberately misgendering him, which is rude to do to anyone and a particularly sore point for trans people. So “transphobic” still applies.
It depends on what happens in tommorrows comic, but I really, really found sweethearts comment deeply unfunny.
Tip identifies as male. So he wears dresses and etc etc. He’s never been missgendered or treated badly because if it that I noticed. And this just bugs me. 🙁
It bugs me from Sweetheart because she’s working with in-universe info and the things you stated above. Working with outside-universe info, I’ve wondered for a while if Tip IS male – his namesake in Oz thought he was a boy, but turned out to have been a girl turned into a boy as a baby. I’m wondering if our Tip’s parents were just a bit more desperate to have a boy… but the original gender shines through…
And I’m torn between wanting this Oz parallel and wanting to keep our fabulous male Tip.
This could turn out to be an alternate universe entirely populated by Tip’s offspring after some terrible plague wiped out anyone who didn’t inherit some kind of immunity gene from him. Unfortunately for Tip, this creates a post-fashion & beauty industry world.
“we don’t look at all alike…” I’m guessing Rebecca-Tip is Dennis-Tip’s half-sister, and their father married different women in the different timelines.
I dunno… my sister and I physically resemble each other hardly at all: different skin tone, height, build, face, *completely* different hair. And yet we still somehow look enough alike that everyone asks if we’re twins.
Absolutely. I have a pair of fraternal-twin nephews; one is blond, brown-eyed, freckled and resembles me somewhat, while the other is darkhaired, blue-eyed and looks strikingly like photos of his great-grandfather. The first one is tall and a bit stocky; the second is slight and short. Parents are blue-eyed and brown-eyed. Go figure…..
Mmm hmm, I think they just mean that there seems to be a particularly strong response to something pretty mild from Sweetheart. Especially since, offensive to whatever extent or not, it’s in character.
It’s actually interesting that despite Sweetheart’s over-socialization in other ways (coffee-cup rampage 😉 ), she can still be quite mean verbally. (And not always without consequence.)
She has that in common with me… basically all my aggression is channeled verbally.
I had no problem at all with Sweetheart’s line. Her expression shows she’s being dry, and referring to Tip’s current stereotypically female fashion hyperfocus. Sweetheart, of all females, klnows that stereotypical doesn’t equal universal.
Gives new meaning to the phrase “same planet, different worlds”.
Tip and Ozma should definitely compare histories, just to see where else they diverge. As a psychologist, Tip should find it fascinating from a scholarly viewpoint. As a whatever-she-is, Ozma might be interested just from morbid curiosity.
Oh, come on folks. That was a funny comment by Sweetheart. She gets to joke about his fashion choices for the same reason my sister gets to joke about my bald head: we’re family. And for all purposes, this gang is a family. And in my sister’s case, if an outsider actually insulted me, my sis would open some kickass.
It seems Sweetheart has a British sense of humor!
:>))
Sweetheart is Canadian. The sense of humour is similar.
Sarcastic and droll? 😀
Yup!
Cue the “Sex with Myself” prompt, meaning that Tip has dipped into both genders, or possibly been dipped into, bestiality, and now selfcest.
its not bestiality if she’s in human form at the time
And (at the risk of degenerating this further) Oglaf the other day had a quote along the lines of ‘its not necrophilia if they are alive when you started’.
Perhaps in this universe it’s Old Coast Guard…?
Tip (Dennis), while I know the concept may be intriguing… PLEASE don’t screw yourself.
genetically speaking, its not female tip, its his sister. so DEFINATELY dont screw your alternate universe sister, tip
No, no. This is Rebecca Wilkin who states that Dennis Wilkin is her dad. Our “Tip” is Dennis Wilkin, so Rebecca is our Tip’s alternate-self’s daughter.

In the alt timeline, Dennis Wilkin and his wife had a daughter named Rebecca.
Yes, this: Becky is Alt-tip, or how Tip ‘sees’ himself (but she has better fashion sense, so far :p )
Wow. The wilkins were assholes. No wonder Tip turned out the way he did
I wonder if male Tip’s parents wanted a girl.
Proof once again that being transgenic conveys no immunity to transphobia….
Yeah, I thought that was a bit rude myself.
That punchline made me a little uncomfortable, yeah. I don’t think it’s mean-spirited, just thoughtless.
He’s just scared of a world where Tip doesn’t dress Fabulously.
Oh wait, you mean Sweetheart’s line. I think it was just in good humor.
“Good humour”
FTFY
… And now we can be certain that Tip dyes his hair.
This may be stretching things a bit, but I think Sweetheart is making a rather pointed observation that the parents of Tip/Rebecca are pretty much misogynist assholes who preferred a “manly” generic son and, both times, either got themselves a capable and intellectually superior daughter with outstanding post-apocalyptic survival skills that they didn’t appreciate or a brilliant and capable son who just happens to have a laser shop sense of feminine fashion and a level of narcissism that would astound Narcissus. a laser shop sense of feminine fashion
I want one of those.
I think it’s less that she disapproves of Tip’s sexuality than that she just disapproves of Tip.
This.
You do realise that Tip is straight, don’t you?
Correction: “Tip’s gender identity.” Though that doesn’t quite fit either….
Gender expression would probably be the appropriate term.
He still identifies as male, he just likes wearing dresses
If that were true, explain his relationship with Artie Narbon.
His friendship? Don’t recall them ever getting ‘physically intimate’
Really? It happened several times.
Well, the difference is Nick is rude to EVERYONE and doesn’t mean anything by it while Sweetheart is usually polite and really IS kind of homophobic and racist. At least she’s trying to get over it?
Yeah, Nick’s “mostly” an equal opportunity insulter. This tends to result in Nick tending to insult Tip more/more often than he insults others.
I’m sure Nick’s jealousy of Tip is aggravated by knowing that Dr. Lee and Tip “got it on” in the past.
And inside Nick, literally
I don’t think Tip is meant to be trans. He’s a cross-dressing bisexual male.
I believe you are correct.
Tip seems a little uncertain about it in the filename story:
“He’d only started being Tippi recently, and mostly in his head, and it occurred to him that this might not be the best opportunity to break out the new name. It’d be a heck of a thing to get kicked out for saying the wrong thing just before the final test.

In that case, Sweetheart is deliberately misgendering him, which is rude to do to anyone and a particularly sore point for trans people. So “transphobic” still applies.
Oooh, Sweetheart, low blow!
So he was doing it with…his sister? Unclean! Unclean!
More like himself, so masturbating?
It could be worse. Maybe she’s his daughter.
Hmmmm, you could be on to something…! Depends on the time difference between dimensions, though.
It depends on what happens in tommorrows comic, but I really, really found sweethearts comment deeply unfunny.

Serious question: does the mud-wrestling thing count as in-universe, or outside-universe?
I’m pretty sure that, despite what one would think, it actually happened.
I’m pretty sure that Sweetheart is saying that his parents didn’t get what they wanted in either universe. Not that Tip is a woman.
(TUNE: “I Am The Walrus”, The Beatles)
He is Tip
And she is Tip
And they are Tip
And both of them are Wilkin!
Genders they swap,
It seems that they’re dop-
-Pelgangers …
Don’t bang her!
Clothing from Old Navy …
Tip has gotta hide his eyes!
Stupid Second Gate has
Sent us to a world that’s
Post-apocalyptic
Where there is no fashion sense!
He is the Wilkin …
She is the Wilkin …
They are the Wilkins!
What?! What the frock?! Wait, what?! What the frock?!
Sweet!
He is he as they are he and they are not one gender.
This could turn out to be an alternate universe entirely populated by Tip’s offspring after some terrible plague wiped out anyone who didn’t inherit some kind of immunity gene from him. Unfortunately for Tip, this creates a post-fashion & beauty industry world.
Even worse: Tip is Doctor Dennis Wilkin *Junior*…makes one wonder about his parents, not just his parentage…
I share one name with my father, but I am not a “junior”…
Sorry to see so much dogpiling on Sweetheart, just for telling an uncomfortable, if obvious, truth…
Much like Tip’s cross-dressing, people will think what they think about something like that.
So… any guesses as to who alternative Tip’s (A-Tip) daughter’s mother might be? Perhaps Tigerlilly?
Oh yes – Alternative Tip (A-Tip) should not to be confused with A-typical… as is typical. Oh I’m sorry, I can’t seem to stop…
Nah, not necessarily. You can get a LOT of variety in full siblings. Like, truly and utterly massive. Genetics is crazy.
Wow, so much political correctness in the comments today. 🙁
We call it “manners.”
What if this is Tip and a “non Funk” Tigerlily’s daughter? I can’t even fathom the idea of a Stepford Tigerlily who is all domestic.
Whereas I can imagine that…as what drove her Mad.
I had no problem at all with Sweetheart’s line. Her expression shows she’s being dry, and referring to Tip’s current stereotypically female fashion hyperfocus. Sweetheart, of all females, klnows that stereotypical doesn’t equal universal.
XD If only they would have know, had their child been a boy he would grow up to be a cross-dressing narcissist.
True, then they might have cut poor Rebecca a little slack.
Wait… did we already know that Tip’s first name is Dennis?
I think this is the first mention of his given name, 10/24/08, http://skin-horse.com/comic/blue-or-green/
And the secret story doesn’t get around to his name until a few days later, 10/29/08, http://skin-horse.com/comic/captain-dennis-wilkin/
