“This farmer is upset. ‘The kids have been writing their name in the snow!’ His neighbor says, ‘Calm down, all the boys fool around that way some time or other.’ The farmer says, ‘Yeah, I know, but this is in my daughter’s handwriting!'”
When folklorist Vance Randolph published a collection of “unpublishable” jokes and folk tales from the Ozarks, he chose his title from that joke: Pissing in the Snow.
The more worrying thought is that UNITY herself might in fact be equipped for it. She does enjoy nabbing stray body parts and sewing them on to herself, regardless of whether they’re supposed to be there…
I had assumed Sweetheart was not understanding the basic concept of writing her name in the snow itself, given that she is a female dog who has never had access to a phallus before.
I guess it’s a question of just how innocent and naïve Sweetheart really is. In this case, it arguably could be interpreted either way.
But in my experience, I find it’s the safer bet to overestimate her naïveté than to underestimate it.
The only requirements for whether body parts are supposed to be on Unity or not are 1, they’re not being used by anyone else, and 2, Unity wants or needs them.
That seems a bit unfair of Unity. It’s not an issue of conforming as path of least resistance; as things are now nobody can even hear what Sweetheart’s SAYING.
You can’t see enough of the drones to determine whether or not they’re *all* male, or if just the majority of them are.
But either way, Sweetheart decided she wanted a male drone before she was even aware that the ready-made drones existed, so the point Shen Hibiki was making is still valid either way.
Which is completely reasonable. The more authority you have then the fewer the number of throats you have to rip out in order to establish pack dominance. Sweetheart is therefore clearly doing all her two-legged packmates a favor by thinking this way. ^_^
Like I pointed out the other day, Sweetheart went straight for the male Caucasian statistical norm, only with a freakin’ big chin. And she didn’t HAVE to, but she did, and she probably did so without even questioning it– it’s like somebody asked her, “Hey, Sweetheart, would you like to be an Alpha Male?”
I wondered if she was thinking about impressing Unity, whatever that would mean. It’s hard to know what type Unity would find attractive. She liked Remy (sp?)
I think Unity likes people for who they are, not what they look like. After all, she can completely change her appearance at will if she wants, so she of all people knows that a person is who they are inside, not what they look like outside.
File our ever-loving files,
A file won’t bring it here to me.
Can’t even see my kind, it’s wrong,
And that can bring some fear to me.
New body’s got some glory.
Some like it kinda gory.
How, hereof, just how I’ll be,
This drone is fine and I can whoah you
With my love.
Squawk, ecdysiasting nerds,
And predicate it all on me.
If I can have this new male life,
It’s clear that you would fall for me.
You think that I’m just venting spleen,
It’s so absurd to say.
It’s so absurd, absurd is all I have,
To fake my part today.
It’s so absurd, absurd is all I have,
To fake my part today.
I don’t think this is where the joke is going, but just in case:
Hey, what parts you have has /nothing/ to do with what gender you identify as. To say otherwise or make it a joke is kinda disrespectful to transgender people. All kinds of trans people have all kinds of parts, and not all of them are uncomfortable enough with what they might have been born with to want to change that.
Thanks for keeping things fairly cool in the comments so far, though! As pointed out in other comments, too, this isn’t the first time Unity’s even hinted at this, and the characters in the comic have so far been surprised and slightly confused, but didn’t react badly overall.
You’re all cool with me, just needed to say that. :-}
Given past comments made in the comic (and Unity’s general Unity-ness overall), I’ve read it as “I, Unity, am a (stone cold badass) chick, but that doesn’t mean I can’t switch out equipment for whatever it is I need/want/feel like at the moment. Because I am already a mass of self-aware nanite-goo who identifies as a (usually)human-form chick, and adding an extra arm or willy to that don’t make that any weirder!”
And the fact that neither she nor anyone else in-universe has ever felt the need to elaborate on the setup to that extent is part of what makes it all so awesome.
Is he equipped for it?
Well, he’s no water cooler.
“This farmer is upset. ‘The kids have been writing their name in the snow!’ His neighbor says, ‘Calm down, all the boys fool around that way some time or other.’ The farmer says, ‘Yeah, I know, but this is in my daughter’s handwriting!'”
HA! Never heard that one before.
Thought it was old when *I* heard it.
When folklorist Vance Randolph published a collection of “unpublishable” jokes and folk tales from the Ozarks, he chose his title from that joke: Pissing in the Snow.
Ah yes, Pissing in the Snow. Had some truly bawdy stories, a great many of which were in very poor taste. I loved that book.
The more worrying thought is that UNITY herself might in fact be equipped for it. She does enjoy nabbing stray body parts and sewing them on to herself, regardless of whether they’re supposed to be there…
I thought that realization is what Sweetheart was ‘Wait, what’ing
I had assumed Sweetheart was not understanding the basic concept of writing her name in the snow itself, given that she is a female dog who has never had access to a phallus before.

Agreed, and it now occurs to me that Unity could do a convincing remake of “We Are the World” all by herself.
Wouldn’t be the first time: http://skin-horse.com/comic/said-sweetheart-8/
That wasn’t the first time. It’s beginning to be a thing for Unity.
…but she -could- have been female. She picked male specifically ’cause she wanted extra respect. =P
I didn’t see any female drones in that closet pile.
Clearly that was the closet filled with male drones. The female drones are probably one room down.
You can’t see enough of the drones to determine whether or not they’re *all* male, or if just the majority of them are.
But either way, Sweetheart decided she wanted a male drone before she was even aware that the ready-made drones existed, so the point Shen Hibiki was making is still valid either way.
The females were, no surprise, under the males?
Of course not. Ginny doesn’t fantasize nearly as often about Nick driving a female drone.
Which is completely reasonable. The more authority you have then the fewer the number of throats you have to rip out in order to establish pack dominance. Sweetheart is therefore clearly doing all her two-legged packmates a favor by thinking this way. ^_^
You have a good point.I assumed Unity was talking about the “getting into a drone” thing altogether, not just the specific choice of drone.
Not just male, but male, tall, blond, Caucasian, and good looking.
Like I pointed out the other day, Sweetheart went straight for the male Caucasian statistical norm, only with a freakin’ big chin. Unity’s use of language and choice of observation do make me wonder a little about what she’s had to eat today..
It was always implied that unity is smart even without an influx of grey matter…
The brains seem to mute her impulsiveness and empathy, more than anything.
You mean WHO she’s had to eat…
You mean WHOM she’s had to eat.
Wow. Unity is -owning- Sweetheart today. Comes of all that time being a dead activist, I suppose!

That’s my headcanon, at least.
Now you’ve gone and made me wonder just what exactly is her snow-writing medium.
Yeah, Unity is pretty delightfully transhuman enough to really not give a care about any of that, and it’s awesome.
I think you may be reading too much into it. But just in case, cf. Freefall
Somehow this one really bring the Norm voice in
