Are we certain Dr Lee isn’t mad? Or at least a latent Mad Genius like Dave? I mean, she has no reality-blindness, and she’s certainly evil enough.

Dr Lee is mad, but she’s not MAD. A mad scientist defies the laws of nature and creates impossible things which normal people cannot replicate. Lee’s gift is the ability to turn mad (impossible nonsense) science INTO sane (actual) science. Whether she’s crazy or not is a separate issue.

When one is a Mad scientist, the difference between “good” and “evil” is slim. Arguably, they’re all “evil”, but the “good” ones use their evil for good. I have no doubt that Dr. Lee is quite Mad, not latent. In theory, most Mad scientists could turn Mad science sane, but pretty much all of them are so busy creating things, so they’ve never actually tried.

Dr. Lee’s brain is constantly thinking about 43 thousand things at once, so it’s only natural that she would at some point have said to herself, “hey, I wonder if I can figure out how to make it so normal people can reproduce these impossible things I keep thinking of?” And of course, once she figured out how to make her own ideas reproducible, the logical progression was to take other people’s projects and do the same thing.

This probably all happened by the time she celebrated her 10th birthday.

As for whether she’s crazy, well, being Mad, her own sanity is also a grey area. You could say that as far as Mad scientists go, she’s on the “sane” end of the spectrum, but since she is Mad, she’s still not as sane as a crazy non-Mad person. It’s all relative.

Bravo! Bravo! An excellent explanation of the madness!
