As a transvestite, I can shed some light on this. “Transvestite”, like all other gender or sexual identities, applies regardless of what clothing one is wearing. Though I usually wear men’s clothing (I’d probably get fired otherwise, and would definitely receive more bigotry than usual), I still consider myself a transvestite.
The right wing is really afraid of transvestites wearing fishnets, long fingerless gloves, and sparkly vests. Especially when they’re from “Transsexual, Trann-syl-vanniaaaa.”
