Apologies if this has already been asked, Shaenon and Jeff, but was the Jersey Devil (or whatever it turns out to be) planned way back in ’07? Or was the safehouse’s location a happy coincidence?

I guess this is long after that (good heavens, I’ve been reading this since ’07?), but Shaenon’s love for the Jersey Devil is well attested FWIW: http://www.shaenon.com/monsteroftheweek/2012/07/27/07272012/

Just like in a B horror movie.

Not quite. If they were following a solid B movie script they would all have gone in different directions. And, some of them would be taking showers.

And any robots present would be participating in the killing.

Sweetdaddy sounds so kinky when he talks like that. So just how does that translate?

I think (but am not entirely certain):
Fin me a solid! = Help!
Sick jive turkey = The Jersey Devil
jackin me to the bone! = is attacking me!

        April 26, 2016, 9:12 am | # | Reply

“Jackin me to the bone” does sound like something else is being done.

I suppose that’s the point of jive, actually.

I think jive turkey is referring to good ol’ Uncle Shelby.

In a murder mystery, presuming the guilt of the consensus suspect — I was going to say the “obvious suspect,” but that’s someone else entirely — is beyond premature. Shelby cannot be ruled out (though I would call that long odds), but a “jive turkey” need not speak jive. (By the way, I wonder which linguistic resource the writers are relying on. Whatever, it’s convincing enough for me.)

As usual I look forward to being fooled about what’s really happening.

There are red herrings aplenty, but Shelby encouraged SweetDaddy to take a stroll. At night. By himself. Clearly not in his best interest. This disingenuousness makes him A jive turkey, if not THE jive turkey.

A perfectly good theory, so we’ll see. It’s not hard to imagine a possible hidden motive. And by consensus suspect I meant the Jersey Devil, so at least you’re not picking him.

I’m excited about the Kickstarter for Volume 6, and I just wanted to note the excellence of Jacob Haller’s song in your video.

Since “do me a solid” would be a request for assistance, I am assuming that “fin me a solid” is a more urgent request. Either that, or he’s requesting assistance from a group of Scottish miners on a tributary of the Clyde, but I considered that less likely, in context. [see: Fin Me, on the Rotting Calder]

“Sick jive turkey” is a compound pronoun referencing whoever he is trying to insult at that moment, who is “jackin’ me to the bone.” We do not yet know if this in fact the Jersey Devil, but it’s someone being accused of improprieties against a robot.

    April 26, 2016, 1:08 pm | # | Reply

In this context, “jackin” a robot would most likely be to remove pieces for theft or other appropriative uses, perhaps forcibly [from slang for ‘hijacking’ or forcible theft of physical objects]. So, the implication is that he is not only being attacked, but stolen outright or disassembled on the spot. This is a bad thing, especially if you have not left behind a set of re-assembly instructions for such emergency situations.

Sorry, but the only working translator I could find was “jive to pedantry.”

The one person/robot who goes outside is attacked by the monster. What an incredible stroke of inevitability.

Two people are outside: Shelby and Sweetdaddy. Could be Shelby attacked Sweetdaddy.

Time for Ms Jones to do a major upgrade on Sweet Daddy weapons systems.
