X-rated comics are boring if they feel the need to live up to their rating all the time. If they’re okay with having long stretches of SFW content when that’s what the story calls for, the rating doesn’t make them more boring. (Of course, that combination reduces the market over either other option, but that doesn’t have to be a show-stopper these days.)
Tip is really off his game. He’s been trying to get Tigerlily in bed since he first laid eyes on her, and now that she’s practically throwing herself at him, he’s stalling with a bunch of senseless questions.
I’m embarrassed to admit that Tip’s been in plainclothes so long, I completely forgot he used to crossdress all the time. Hell, maybe a nice new dress IS all he needs to spark himself back up.
I realize it is not my comic, but a series of four panels featuring Tip and Tigerlily along with a steadily rising MOJO-METER with the peak a bright rainbow of bling….can we have such a thing?
Tip will either spontaneously generate the most fashionable apparel yet once his mojo is back, or the lioning with each other will not recharge him until he acquires the new perfect outfit.
Tip has been acquiring a new outfit piece by piece, though I think he is still missing the keystone. But your pessimism is well placed. When lightning strikes, it won’t be because Tigerlily and Tip penciled it into their schedules. This is their most lackadaisical effort at recapturing mojo yet. It can either fail according to plan or succeed circuitously.
Tigerlily and Tip cannot have bad sex. But they are not ready to have good sex. Therefore events will intervene to insure they do not have sex at this time. That is logic.
Totally unrelated to today’s comic, but this is the first day of Skin Horse week in the “GoComics presents Comics Every Day” 2018 desk calendar! I can’t post from work, or I’d have mentioned it sooner.
The sequence of strips is from “Can’t Catch Me” (I read ahead). For the most part, they work somewhat okay as stand-alone strips, which is good, as they jump so far from one to the next that you might not know they are part of an ongoing storyline if you haven’t already read the comic. I’ve gotten that impression from several other weeks, but while I’ve been familiar with several other featured comics, SH is the only one so far that I read daily.
Which leads to a question (if Jeff or Shaenon sees this): did you have any input on selecting the strips featured? If so, how did you decide? If not, who does? I doubt you can find a single week of strips to adequately introduce a new reader to something like Skin Horse, where most storylines take months, but I’m not sure the ones chosen convey any sense of what it’s about either.
I was thrilled to see it featured, and I hope it brings you new readers (and/or you were well compensated by GoComics for your inclusion). I’m just a bit puzzled on how and why the specific sequence of strips was chosen.
Frankly, I think the best way to introduce a new reader to a comic – particularly a serial comic like Skin Horse – is to start them at the beginning. They’re eventually going to go to the beginning and binge read it anyway, and that way they don’t start out all confused.
Then again, there is also the method of choosing a particularly good strip from the middle. One that doesn’t give anything important away, but solidly piques their interest. That’s actually how I got hooked on a few new comics – most recently Girl Genius. IIRC, someone in the comments here had linked to a GG strip, and I was immediately engrossed.
I don’t remember how I got started with Skin Horse… I’ve been reading it far too long to recall.
I started somewhere in the middle of the first Jonah Yu and Nera story. When it kept saying “The End,” I thought, “What a crock! This strip is ending just as I found out about it!” But I soon found myself reassured.
It was a while before I found my way here and started posting obnoxious comments on a regular basis.
Excellent wisdom from Tip in panel 4.
Agreed. There are times you just don’t argue, you go with the flow and just determine how long the ride goes.
That was not meant as a double entendre.
I’m reminded of this wonderful moment
http://skin-horse.com/comic/todays-comic-664/
Yes, there should definitely be a smooching scene.
And that reminds me of when Tip and H.T. smooched.
…wonder what effect that one had.
This is a soft R comic, right?
Well, Nick does have a swear filter.
It would be fun to see an X-rated comic where just a few of the characters have filters.
X-rated comics are surprisingly boring. Soft R is much better. (According to a friend)

Counter-argument: Oglaf.
Porn without humor isn’t worth looking at.
For SCIENCE!
That would have been an awesome answer for Tigerlily to have used in panel two!
Should they lie together like lions? Leo didn’t have any luck with his editor…
shoulda told the truth

As the lady said, dangerously low on mojo
And it’s not like he’s new at this ….
Of course, that was pre-Tigerlilly. Maybe what he needs is confidence to recapture some of that.

To paraphrase Roger Rabbit: Not just any questions, questions that are funny!

Your primary postulate might be false, if the creative team thought it would be funny if they did have bad sex.
[Tip and Tigerlily lie next to each other in bed, with matching expressions of discontent]
Tip: Well.
Tigerlily: That was . . .
Tip: Boring? Insipid? Banal? Uninspired?
Tigerlily: . . . Square. Dullsville. Funkless to the max.
Tigerlily: Usually my creative fires start burning like a furnace, but right now, I got nothing.
Tip: What went wrong?
Tigerlily: You’re supposed to be the mojo stud! You tell me!
If you’re not already writing Skin Horse fanfiction, you should be.
Yeah that’s pretty good.

Surprisingly mature of Tip.
