But does Ruby know Ira was Violet Bee?

        August 3, 2021, 7:25 am | # | Reply

Probably not, but it doesn’t matter. She knew that someone pushed her ‘off’ switch years ago, and she didn’t want it to happen again.

          Absolutely.

It’s a security hole; she doesn’t care that Violet Bee used it, she just cares that somebody did.

I’m reminded of a book (one of the John Grimes books by A. Bertram Chandler, I forget the title), where an android had an off-button right about where her belly button would be, and at the end wore a big metal belt buckle covering it.

I think that’s my favorite thing about today’s strip: the implication that Ruby not only learned but also applied a practical lesson from her own past experience. That’s something I could believe Narbonic-era Ruby might do, but not something I’d expect from Skin Horse-era Ruby.

Helen may well have one by now. The hard part would be convincing her this is in any way her problem.

Give Anasigma her name and current coordinates, and sit back as the problem resolved itself.

I’m unclear on whether the Madness Cure is a one-time treatment, or if it’s something that needs to be taken periodically to maintain the effects. I thought it was the latter, but I’m not certain.

When Helen was giving the Cure to Clone!Dave, she commented something along the lines of “as long as he keeps taking it…”, so at least originally, it would wear off on its own. A-Sig may have closed that loophole with their tinkering.

So now Ira will have to feel around Ruby for the real off-switch, remover her clothes…(excuse me a moment while I wipe the drool from my mouth.)

Actually, it’s probably a good thing that Ira didn’t say “flick” in capital letters.

Wait. If Mr. Green has the power to relieve Shaenon from drawing bicycles, is he still a villain that must be stopped?

BWAA-HA-HA-HA! Bicycles, Recumbents and Trikes, oh my! (with a smattering of unicycles for good measure!)

I’d like to take this opportunity to point out that organ grinder monkeys in adorable fedoras on unicycles are woefully underrepresented…

I was hoping someone would point out “organ grinder monkeys” could acquire rather ominous connotations in a Mad Science context…

Depending on whose organs they’re grinding.

Hm. It’s hard to find Unpopular Mechanics magazine. Getting hold of back issues must be a real bugger. I see ads for it in the current issue of Journal of Creative Eschatogenics though, so it’s around.

It would be nice to think that wire were connected to something relevant and likely to give Mr. Green his comeuppance, like say a dispenser for the cure for normalcy.

Then again, this is Ruby we’re talking about. So we should just enjoy thinking about that, but without any real expectation that that’s actually what she did.

The gas can control but one way. Another is off-switch foul play. So Ira’s forefinger has started a ringer. And Ruby feels carried away.

It occurs to me, years too late, the Ruby is not unlike the Wooden Gargoyles in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz. Has anyone attempted to remove her wings and attach them to themselves… or a bicycle?
