Whatever it means, this would probably be a good point for Kate to start talking about the possibilities. Threats to remove an imaginary cake can only take you so far. Especially when you didn’t imagine a knife to cut it with in the first place.
Her mind is a limitless expanse of PINK SATIN. Urgh; says it all right there– never trust anybody who likes pink satin that much. (Mine is made up of a combination of Ankh-Morpork, Kyoto, decrepit used bookstores and desert hiking trails so I can’t really complain, I guess. Still. PINK SATIN.)
For those who came into the series long before I did: Has Dr. Lee ever met Nick in his human form? I’ve got the impression it was she who transferred his brain into the rescue chopper we all know and love. But this strange bird who keeps forcing him to pop up at the most inopportune moments… Ginny doesn’t know anything about this … does she? It’s seems to be the secret A-sig behind the secret Asig.
He showed no sign of recognizing her when she talked him into trying out his wings for the first time. She’d disguised herself when they met in his VR world. She did perform the operation and had a hand in selecting him though.
Yea I’ve been re-reading the old strips and Nick met Dr. Lee about one time when he was human. He didn’t remember very well cause she was using a virtual avatar every other time she met him for “VR” stuff.
Yep, Ginny was the “ruthless brain butcher” behind Nick’s transformation, and also interacted with his psychic-human-self during the adjustment process. The story starts here. (Warning: contains unfiltered Nick dialogue.)
His psychic chats with Kate/Panoptica are a very recent development, after he left Skin Horse and signed up with government superteam AG-1. She first appears here. As far as I know there’s been no established link between AG-1 and A-Sig, although it’s probably reasonable to assume A-Sig are secretly behind most things.
On a point of order about robots that came up yesterday; I found a relevant point poking around the print Volume One (see above). Seems Skin Horse laid claim to Nick on the grounds that he’s a robot, legally (or at least written down in their rules). Certainly that might explain his interest in the fates of the [other] robotic members of their little group…
Yes, that brilliant moment: “The Client self-identifies as a helicopter, so he’s one of ours.” If I remember rightly, Nick is actually in the Machine Union, despite being technically more of a cyborg. Solidarity!
Virginia met Nick in his simulated human form from the start of “I Can Fly” http://skin-horse.com/comic/wardrobe-any-more/. I don’t know if there’s much information about her personal involvement when Nick had a human body.
Kate’s only appeared to Nick during the strip, as far as I know.
I dunno, I think she met the virtual Nick then, the image they were putting into his brain to convince him he was still real. And even she was virtual: an older bearded man.
…and here I thought RK was insufferable.
AG-1 is sort of a dull name. “The Insufferable Eight” (or however many of them there are) is both punchier and more (accurately) evocative.
The cake is a lie, anyway.
But it also wasn’t death, so that’s OK. Sort of.
There’s something about her design that reminds me of Milholland’s superhero characters.
Choose where to go from here? Does that mean he can choose his jobs or choose which department he works for?

Yarmulke?
Yes. Being a mental image of himself, it represents his jewishness in a small way
Yeah, that surprised me too. Has he worn it in any previous appearances?
Every canon appearance except the first, where he was wearing a bulky VR helmet instead.

Is that a Jewish kippah hat on his head?
Yes. He also has a mezuzah on the door of his cockpit, I believe.
Ooh. Gotta see that. But can’t in any of the recent strips…diving for the books now…
I think it was mentioned in one of Jeff’s stories over on his Livejournal or WordPress or something.
Didn’t see it in Volumes One, Four, or Five; time constraints prevented further search till later.
Did find one interesting thing; see below.
Is that it in http://skin-horse.com/comic/psych-test-this-one/ ?
Yes.
Nick talked about getting his mezuzah on his livejournal: http://skin-horse.com/comic/a-low-level-civil/
Unless I’m mistaken, you can catch a tiny glimpse of it in the second panel here: http://skin-horse.com/comic/a-low-level-civil/ and more clearly in the last panel here: http://skin-horse.com/comic/thought-to/
Oh, I am totally going to threaten to unimagine somebody’s bundt cake out of context
I guess “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!” won’t work here…

the little jewish hat thingis pretty good, butit would be 10x better is it was also a propellor beanie
Why does this have me thinking of the last episode of “The Prisoner”?
Given the content and general vibe of that last episode, pretty much anything or even nothing in particular could bring it to mind.
That would be telling!
I’d be more concerned with her first sentence: “Eyes everywhere, Nick. Mine and others.”
This might be a little off-putting, but Panoptica might be trying to tell Nick something subtly here. (Sadly, “subtle” doesn’t quite work on Nick.)
I wonder what she looks like in real life…
Hey, Nick, how about a verse or two of “Dry Bones”?
“The mind is its own place and in itself can make a heaven of Hell, a hell of Heaven.”
