Unity in a whimsy sim?
The Four Horsemen have mutated into something truly horrifying, – an amalgamation of childlike joy, barbarian rage and infectious goo. At this point, the planet is more boned than a skeleton.
I don’t know why anyone has considered her a sane genius at all. What – just because she claims to be? People (in-comic) have repeatedly questioned that claim. Case-in-point: http://skin-horse.com/comic/todays-comic-795
Agreed, awgiedawgie. Just because Dr. Lee can reproduce the results of Mad Science doesn’t in any way imply that she is sane. Since when has Virginia ever acted in a way that most would recognize as sane?
I suppose that it’s a quibble, but in the Narboniverse, “mad” and “insane” aren’t quite the same. Ginny is not a “mad scientist”, but that doesn’t mean that she’s sane by normal standards. (But then; who in the cast is?)
I have more than once gone into significant detail why I very firmly believe that Virginia is indeed a Mad scientist. At this point, I’d only be wasting my breath detailing it yet again. If people still don’t want to accept it, that’s their choice. After all, she doesn’t even accept it herself.
Nanites, being so absurdly small, would require highly specialized programming custom designed solely to operate on their (extremely limited) hardware.
If you took that programming and injected it into a totally different form of hardware, it would almost certainly not operate at all, much less operate properly. For example, you can’t stick the OS for a computer system of a jet fighter into the computer system of a commercial automobile and get it to work.
You’d be feeding erroneous inputs into the system, and getting equally erroneous outputs. As the old saying goes, “Garbage in, garbage out”.
I honestly think it’d actually be more likely for the nanites to be able to perform a classical “infection” – if they can interface with and hijack the bioelectrics of the brain, they could at least theorertically do much the same with the processors of a robot. (Although it seems unlikely.)
I suppose the hand-wavey answer would be that Virginia somehow modifies the program or whips up some sort of emulation extension to run it on, etc.
Dr. Lee is pointing out that normal zombie viruses are carbon based biology whereas Unity’s consciousness was spawned from an imprint of Mel’s and persists as a holographic pattern carried by the nanite swarm. She isn’t program, she’s “data in motion” and could be transcribed onto the Semantic Web.
Hey, if Jeff Goldblum can hack an E.T.’s spaceship with a Mac laptop and infect it with a virus, I’m sure Unity’s nanites will have no problem in this situation.

What she proposes may be totally impossible. But then again, Unity’s very existence is totally impossible. But as a Mad scientist – as Helen Beta Narbon was so fond of pointing out – Virginia is not limited by the “possible”.
This is by far the most frightening thing I’ve ever seen in “Skin Horse”.

Seriously, “the cloud” being Unity, and capable of infecting humans too would explain a lot about why people are so keen to hand over their vital data and programs.
I would love to see the crystal ball in Times Square replaced with a gigantic popcorn popper, filling the surrounding streets with multiple colors and flavors of popcorn!
