Probably less compelling a book than you’d think. It’s a St. Charlie guy so I’m guessing the first gag is breeding mantis-men and the next thousand are just having them do various sorts of pinching.
A Mad with one hand replaced by a mechanical lobster claw capable of cutting through steel. Beast-people hybrids and uplifted animals don’t do proper Mad Science. (Are there Mad uplifted animals? I don’t think we’ve met one yet: the Hungry Tiger uses madtech but doesn’t built it himself.)
Or they can beat him by plotting against him when he’s standing just over there and can hear every word. This compels him to waste time killing Dr. Walske when he’d like to have spent that time killing everyone.
Seems like something Our Heroes would have to deal with. Although St. Charlie probably still employs most of them as security people (recent events with rogue AIs notwithstanding).
I think Chris and Marcie squarely fall into the camp that Dr Lee does, in that while their work appears to be pretty much the same as that of Mad Scientists, they don’t identify themselves as such. And to be honest, all three do appear pretty sane and stable.
Compare them to Helen, Tigerlily and the St Charlie crowd… although it has to be admitted that Helen does a pretty good cover job of hiding Real Helen for most of Narbonic, as does Mad Dave after things settle down. But those guys are major league
Also… Marcie may not be referring to the mantis men, but to how bloody annoying the St Charlie guys are (and this one is possibly THE most annoying one of all!).
I want to read that book.
