Responding to some of yesterday’s speculation … I don’t think this is Dave, he’s not wearing glasses. He introduced himself as “Dr. Rudary” back on October 29. Also, the zombies seem to prefer bridge to poker.

    =====================================================
(TUNE: “Suicide is Painless” (theme from M*A*S*H), Johnny Mandel)

While walking by the sewer side,
From the grating, someone cried …
To be polite, the doctor tried,
But all at once was pulled inside!

    This sewer sight is painful!
    This zombie wants a brainful!
    Dear Rudary,
    Now you will be
    Dessert!

Also, we’ve seen glimpses of Dave as he is today. Nothing leads me to believe he’s undead at this time, although of course that could change in the future and then change back, considering who he’s married to.

Well, what they were playing yesterday didn’t look like bridge, especially if Nick was in on that hand.

Also, even they may have similar body structures, Dave always wore glasses; it was one of the major points towards the end of Narbonic, how his glasses operated, and I seriously doubt he’d go anywhere without them, undead or alive.

it is a portmontu of the words grab and lurch which considering at lest one of the people is a zombie makes perfect sense

At a guess it’s some sort of necrotic gestalt entity that assimilates other undead. Or it’s just really grabby and has poor manners.

I’ve never commented on this comic before, despite all the fantastic storylines and characters, but I just had to speak up this time to say: The last panel just had me gaping at the screen.
Dr. Rudary is apparently BEING EATEN. And judging by his response? He is quite offended about it!
I’d be willing to swear on a bitcoin that there is No Other Comic anywhere on the Net that could pull this off and make it perfectly plausible in context.

Poor Dr Rudary. He may have been a Star Trek fan in unlife, but now he’s an undeadshirt.

Whatever it is, it’s got some horsepower behind it.
Those storm drain grates are usually made of cast iron.

What strikes me is that, even with one of the bars broken, that’s still a really small hole to drag a body through. Even if Dr. Rudary survives (unsurvives?) this, he’s probably gonna need a little patching up. What’s a new skeletal system cost these days?

Okay, I’m going to call this: the sewer creature is another one of Anasigma’s “sane” science creations. They’re going after the zombie community with an Eater Of The Dead to clear out the shamblers around the Emperor and disrupt any peace process, if not outright assassinate Norton himself. The sprayed Dr. Lee with some sort of nanotech tracking device on a frequency they know that Nick doesn’t normally scan to act as a beacon to find them.

    Jinkies – a clue!

There appears to be a reflection in Dr. Rudary eyes.

Of what, I do not know.
