      “Morden:
      What do you want?

      Vir Cotto:
I’d like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price. I would look up at your lifeless eyes and wave like this. [gives a mockingly cheerful finger waggle] Can you and your associates arrange this for me, Mr. Morden?”

        Vir definitely got his wish.

And to think that Vir started out as comic relief. One of TV’s strongest examples of character development that I can think of.

I see your Vir and raise you a G’Kar – starting off as the ambassador for the lizard-like alien race (and thus sci-fi coded-evil), aggressive and warlike against the funny human-like aliens and looking for violence and conquest, and ending up as a spiritual leader, refusing power, refusing vengeance, and preaching that an eye for an eye makes everyone blind. His arc, especially combined with Londo’s, is one of the best bits of television ever, in my opinion.

G’Kar really was such an amazing character by the end of the show. He had grown soft and bloated as a diplomat, but the trauma he went through burned away all that to reveal such amazing strength of character that he became a beacon of hope to his entire race.

Did Vir ever get beyond “one”? (Centauri have six!)

Did Lennier ever manage to visit that temple on Earth dedicated to Shirley?

He got to “Emperor”, so I’m guessing he had access to the full range of higher numerical values.

Good to see they have their priorities straight – enemies converging on their position, and they’re having a Babylon 5 watch party.

Of course, Jonah may have foreseen that this is their best move… or that A-sig and the Biomass will destroy each other, and they have nothing to worry about. General Pig may have been totally correct.

It’s good for strategy ideas. They probably watched Lord of the Rings first – their primary weapons are two dragons after all. Next up might be Deep Space Nine if they have time.

Solitary is for minimum-security risks only. You’re too dangerous for that.

If you’re going to improvise a brig, it’s better if there’s a toilet inside.

I’m thinking A. A. will sneak in to see Valiant, get tossed in there, and both will be rescued from this fate-worse-than-death by Valiant.

But are they going to have the B5 reboot in the Narboniverse? Of course it won’t launch until after Skin Horse ends, but hopefully the characters will get to enjoy it in fanfics yet to be written.

There’s no brig to put this guy in. He’s let loose by the teeth of his skin. But the nerds think they’re smarty, so they’re having a party, in the “Babylon 5” looney bin.

Babylon 5 was a bit slow getting started, and was uneven at times, but there was also much in the series that was very worthy.

        July 19, 2023, 12:29 pm | # | Reply

Agreed! Many, many fine points in that show! And for all that it feels slow to get started, re-watching it you realise how many of the key story elements were introduced right at the start. Major plot points that would be fully explored in season 2 or 3 were introduced in the third episode.

The CGI is extremely dated, but I loved that the starfurys seemed to operate on actual space physics, there are a wide variety of alien species that are incredibly varied and very few feel like re-skinned humans, and the story is just… four seasons of some of the best story telling you will ever find.

I wonder if Nick identifies with the White Star, or perhaps some other ship.

    • D. Walker
      October 15, 2021, 11:17 pm | # | Reply

Given how angry he is, wouldn’t he be a Starfury?

(Also, puns aside, a White Star requires a crew compliment of 50, whereas the Starfury requires only a single pilot, which is a far better thematic fit. Plus Nick is all human tech anyway – no alien stuff. Well, not yet anyway…)

Sweetheart has definitely leveled up. I never expected this much creativity from her. She really is a natural-born leader! And I love her expressions of annoyed impatience in the first two panels. She clearly has no time for this fool, and just needs somewhere to put him while she deals with more important things.
