Plus, they are not dependent on electrical power, unless you’re using one of those new-fangled ones with artificial back-lighting.
Why, in my day, we could only do our microscopy in well-lit rooms, preferably with a southern exposure…but I digress.
The kind shown in the illustration would be able to help Ginny differentiate between, say, plant and animal cells. If those samples are not what they appear to be, she would get useful information.
Does #3 moonlight as a Dalek or something? This part of the story very much reminds me of the Dr. Who episode in which we learned the translations of the Dalek phrases.
An innocent reader happening upon Skin Horse for the first time would think, “This comic makes no sense whatsoever!”
