Well, that’s what happens when you get a monument half-built, then take a generation off… to lollygag, beat up neighbor nations, and such…

You lollygag over to here. Then you lollygag over to there.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MAKES YOU?!

Hey, could be worse. My city has a cathedral that is brown in the base and white and the top (apparently the first backer ran out of money and the next used way cheaper materials).

The pause was more to beat up ourselves.

Technically speaking, the United States of America is a treaty organization, not a country (hence why most of the member units are called states). So yes, half of the member nation-states did go beat up neighbor former-member nation-states.

A treaty organization is created by a treaty. The US is created by a constitution.

And quite a few countries have subordinate states.

I’m enough of a Terry Pratchett fan to now wonder if she’s been tracking the same sort of Sugar Cube Problem Sergeant Colon had to deal with when he was running The Watch? o_O

Whatever her faults, I’m pretty sure Sweetheart can count.

Mind you, in fairness to Sweetheart, I doubt it took more then half a day’s work and it probably also sent a very good “Don’t try to out-crazy me. I eat crazier things then you for breakfast to anyone thinking of taking her place. ^_~

“Impossible! They’d never accept her as Heterodyne without the consent of the castle.”
“Not unless she DESTROYED the castle, danced naked through the ruins trying to shoot the moon, and then constructed a very dangerous fountain out of sausages.”
“…Well yes, that goes without saying.”

No sense in letting these ancient priceless monuments get run down just because of a little apocalypse. I bet getting rid of the things will save a lot of maintenance time and effort.

So the fox’s name is Renard. Is this an allusion I smell in the air?

On another note, this is the cutest bureaucratic dystopia I know. 🙂

Allusion…? As far as I know ‘renard’ does mean fox, so doesn’t need to be a reference to anything… though I may be wrong =P

As I understand it a reynard is a male fox, just as a vixen is a female fox.

“Reynard the Fox” was a popular character in medieval French fables. So popular that “renard” actually became French for “fox”. There’s a whole load of later fox characters called “Reynard” (Gunnerkrigg Court, anyone?) but I’ve not seen the “Renard” spelling used as a name before.
At university, we once put on a play about Fauvel the corrupt and lecherous horse, who is from the same background but who sadly never really caught on.

Actually, the one in GK is Renard, and supposedly the actual fable character. Making things confusing is that he’s also called Reynardine, which is a different character altogether (though there are valid story reasons why he has both names).

Iirc, Renard the Fox shows up in at least one French fairy tale. Possibly spelled Reynard. I don’t remember the details at this time.

Actually, it was “Renart”. From what I gathered, both the French “Renart” and the English “Reynard” are muted forms of “Reinhard”, a German name.

In case you’ve forgotten, Renard the fox first showed up at the end of My Brother Sam Is Dead, as H.T.’s assistant. Apparently, assisting the crazy quadrupedal leader is his lot in life.

He was also seen at the beginning of this story as a beauraucratic aid to Daphne complaining about the skin horse bathrooms. He’s an H.T. toadie and as H.T. was killed protecting an orphanage and sweetheart filled his place, it makes sense that Daphne and Renard will be scooped up by sweetheart as collateral.

Renard’s expression in panel one is that of somebody desperately trying to figure out what answer is least likely to result in his face being bitten off.

The “acting president” was mentioned earlier. Maybe Sweetheart isn’t president de jure because of her Canadian birth.

You think she’s crazy now, wait until this version of Sweetheart (to cut down on confusion, let’s call her President Fancy) meets our version of Sweetheart and U.N.I.T.Y. Even money on whether she attacks immediately or breaks down and runs for the bathtub gin.

If President Fancy broke down and ran for the bathtub every time she felt stressed, I doubt she would still be Acting President.
