I kinda wonder how much control Goldbug et al have over the course of the VR program. Do they actually pick out the scenarios, guide what happens, or is the program locked into reacting to subject’s mind, with everyone just along for the ride?
Pavane should know her audience. Lifelong bureaucrats tend to be very straightforward, black-and-white thinkers, and do not do well with colorful metaphors and allusions (cough, don’t ask how I know this, cough). If Sweetheart hadn’t noticed what was going screwy before this, she needs to be whacked in the head with the truth, possibly several times.
On the plus side, this would fit in very nicely with Sweetheart’s mindset and neuroses at this point.

Sweetheart is from the Spitz/Samoyed family, which tops out around 20″ tall. That’s not so literal.
