I’ve been thinking flesh versus steel myself. I even dug up quotes from the “real isn’t how you’re made” book (whatever it was called) and ranted at length about it to a friend.
(TUNE: “Go Where You Wanna Go”, The Mamas & The Papas)
[CHORUS:]
I tell you,
Old War was long ago …
Now do you want the news?
I’ll destroy you …
So hard you’ll sing the blues!
Old War was long ago,
But dude, to you it’s new!
Damn, you tricked me!
That “listening” thing you do!
Old and deadly war,
Soon you all will be destroyed … like before!
I piqued your interest!
You were all “don’t care”!
But we act like friends now …
Da-ammit, I see
What you did there! [repeat CHORUS]
“Don’t let her provoke a fight. It ain’t the Old War no more.”
I also thought Gavotte may have referenced the Old War at some point when the team was away, but I may be just be confusing it for another vague clue that she knows more than she tells them (and discusses it with Moustachio over tea).
When Moustachio brought it up, I assumed that it had to do with whatever events caused him to be built, but the swamp reference really confuses the issue.
Some sort of ‘creator vs. created’ war, that for some reason the bulk of people don’t know about, but the ‘created’ underground does, with Skin Horse having been created to keep things from going out of control and it happening again, by helping the ‘created’ feel like they were ‘real,’ while the society at large still considered them ‘other’.
The underground, of course, knows how they’re viewed by the folks at large, and don’t like it, remembering the war.
One of the old native american myths, possibly a mesoamerican myth, had something about humanity’s tools rising up against humanity – even domesticated animals.
If it wasn’t for the way a day takes forever in the strip – I’d think this was a 2012 arc – much like there was a after-Y2K comic (still may run for all I know).
Time to delve into the google-vaults – maybe bookmark some comic archives for the long holiday weekend.
Maybe the old war is a whole “mad science vs. sane gov’t” thing, with the rulers of the world trying to chain their discoveries, and the scientists trying to win their freedom to alter reality as they see fit.
Hmm…let me guess, Life versus Death? Humans versus…Zombies? Lawyers?
Nu-uh, Plants vs. zombies too(2)!

Wait, is this some sort of crossover with Girl Genius? Though that is “The Long War”, but it would be in the distant past…
Creators versus created would be my guess.
Gerbils vs hamsters.
Hamsters? That’s ridiculous. Everyone knows the natural enemy of the chimeric shapeshifting gerbil is the genetically-altered tiger.

“Sweetheart, Unity, we’re leaving. I need to talk to Gavotte. We’ve got a Major Story Arc Foreshadowing situation here!”
That has got to be the best excuse ever!
Of course, Gavotte will probably say, “I already knew about that. You didn’t know about that?”
…what were the other two references? I don’t remember this at *all*.
Me neither. Maybe they were offscreen.
I don’t know about *clients*, but it’s come up a couple of times.
http://skin-horse.com/2009/todays-comic-113/ — Hmmm, I guess M was a client at this point. Tip did get out the puppets.
I believe there’s another reference in “Come Swing From My Branches”, but I don’t have the time to hunt it down at the moment.
If I may be of some use:

Thanks, you two!
Thanks, Kirt and Axel!
‘Client’, ”homicidal manic”, what’s the difference when you’re Black Ops Social Services?
With science!

Which would fit with what Anasigma is trying to do today.
It’s frightening to think that, somewhere under Tip’s facade, he’s actually a competent psychologist….
I am an incompetent saboteur. I fix things by accident.

Yeah, I went there.
