I think Illuminati has become a general term for any secret organization that pulls the strings. Ironically, the original historical Illuminati stood for something completely different and benevolent compared to to the moderrn version(s), look it up if you don’t believe me.
Plus, they couldn’t pull strings worth a damn, which really would’ve come in handy towards the end of their first (and only) year.
If I recall, the original conspiracy theories painted them as anarchists threatening to overthrow all the monarchies and aristocracies of Europe. But at some point during the couple centuries where the Illuminati were temporarily out of fashion with the conspiracy theory crowd, people realized that those in power were scarier than those trying to rid them of it. And then Shea and Wilson decided to bring them back…
We work for the Illuminati,
On problems rather knotty.
We take snow days in many ways,
And practice our karate.
We practice our conspiracy.
With fear and cheer by ear-acy.

With ethics rather spotty.
So many times we commit crimes
