Popeye’s Cartoon Club
Shaenon: This year is Popeye’s 90th birthday (and the 100th birthday of Olive Oyl and the rest of the Thimble Theatre comic strip), so King Features has been running Sunday comics by guest artists all year long. My husband Andrew and I had the incredible honor of contributing one, which ran last Sunday. This was huge fun to write and draw. You can read it here or on the King Features site here.
Channing: Ah, yes, our hero meets his greatest foe–the asinine schoolyard chant composed about him.
I knew a guy back in the early 2000s who used the forum handle “Disgustipated”. No idea what he’s been up to since.
Half of one of the bare-nekkid wimmin does look like Unity…
While the other one looks kinda like Virginia.
Could be worse- he could be hexed to eat all the worms, and spit out the germs…!
Additional note: “brazoos” is canonically Popeye’s word for bras. This came up in the old Thimble Theatre strips because Popeye did a lot of cross-dressing.
But will he be swimmin’ between their legs?
I think Segar would have liked this!
I used to have a few original comics pages with “Starring Popeye” as the title. Found ’em under ancient linoleum. Also found a Popeye “Tijuana Bible”… all stolen out of storage, long ago. Oddly enough, there were WWI newspapers on top of the linoleum. The paper was weird, like half glazed. Not yellow at all…
I have never stored anything of value without it being stolen. I used to have the uncensored “The Avengers” episodes “Castle D’eath” and “Hellfire Club”, a working Zenith Transoceanic that received British AM in KY…
I feel for your multiple losses, having had several first-edition Heinleins stolen out of my own storage space. But I’m dying to know how you acquired the uncensored Avengers episodes.
My comic book collection got jacked. I had the first 16 comics of the origina Bionicle run, a Pizza-Hut Xxmen comic (the one where Gambit uses his power to be able to safely touch Rogue), and a number of Dark Horse and Image comics.
Not to mention some independently published comics I picked up at an anime convention a decade ago.
My parents used to say “disgustipated,” and I had no idea where it came from. Was there a censored “Castle D’eath” or was the one I saw the only version?
I ordered bootleg VHS’s in the early days of VCR’s. All DVD/BRD versions I’ve seen are censored in that Emma’s seductive stroking of a cannon several times was trimmed to one partial stroke, and filled in, I swear, by a shot of a wall!
P.S. I have no idea why my comment is labeled Blog Editor. I’m not.

Is that Kilroy (as in “was here”) in the last panel, lower left?
She’s a Goon. I think her name was Alice.
I LOVE THAT!!! BTW, that’s Alice the Goon in the last panel.
