Heh. Reminds me of those hedgehog shaped moss-planters you can get as lawn ornaments. The possibilities, though! The maker community could swap new part designs and compete to grow the most ingenious Hedgie body-plans! And the results could destroy us all.
I’m not completely sure, but I think the only way to get one right now is by ordering it directly from the company. The cheapest way to get one (for about 1200 euros, I believe) is by ordering one in unassembled condition.
You can spend as little as $350 unassembled wood/$600 complete in metal from printrbot ( and a few others in that price range) to a few thousand, to tens of thousands for industrial.
Moore money buys more features, bigger print volume, higher speed, more famous branding, and less fussiness.
Whether those things are worth it depend on what you are planning to do with it. 3D printers are where home computers were in the 70’s. They are transitioning from people who want to make 3D printers, to people who want to print things, to people who want the things that they print.
I was in a geekasaurus electronics store just a couple of days ago and they had thee models from $1300 to $2500. Large printer bays and they had one running making silly bits that were scattered around the store to make you drool.
What? No tiki chia pet? And Robert, I have a Makerbot and highly recommend them (www.makerbot.com), been printing out tikis for Shaenon and toys for kids ever since I got it.
The pun. It burrrrns.
Next, they should make a Mongoose!
They’ll have to find some Mon, though…
Or a wombat! They just need to find some . . . wait . . .
“Next, they should make a Mongoose!
They’ll have to find some Mon, though…”
Oh, that’s easy. Just wait to drop the goose in on Monday.
What pun?
It’s a hedgehog.
It’s a hedgehog (animal)! It’s also a hedge (plant)!
Also, it was formed from a plant runner, and is a running plant.
(TUNE: “America The Beautiful”, Bates & Ward)
A bucketful of plastic parts
Were printed in 3-D …
It captivates the girly hearts
And makes K.T. go squee!
Adorable! Adorable!
A hedgehog made of hedge!
It fills its quills
With chlorophyll,
And smells like Lemon Pledge!
Another Laugh out Loud morning brought to you by Ed!
Isn’t America written by Julia Ward? Anyway, that was really good if somehow patriotic.
Julia Ward Howe wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Samuel Ward and Katharine Lee Bates wrote “America the Beautiful.”

It’s okay, their time and energy would be drawn into adorable construction-fights with their arch-rivals, the fans of … MISTER POTATO HEDGE!
–Dave, ty, ty, i’ll be here all {sfx: HOOK} aaaaaIEEE
What does a three-dee printer retail for? Looking more and more like it might be a worthwhile investment…

I have soooo many sweet tikis from Paul.
Never underestimate the power of cuteness Jonah. You really should have hedged your bets.
Does that mean they are going to weaponize chia pets next?
Or just use them to distribute seeds for the sentient swamp.
