One of the cool things about this storyline is the opportunity it’s given me to work with a number of different cartoonists across all ranges of experience. Art for the next few weeks is brought to us all by Brenton “Dazhbug” Loeffelman, a talented visual artist who is with this storyline taking his first foray into the field of comics. Check out his deviantART for more from his pen! Thanks, Dazhbug!
Also, you may check out a higher-resolution version of this strip over on the GoComics mirror!
This is so seriously cute.
Hi Shaenon – Hows mother and baby doing? 🙂
Right, so Shaenon not only commented on my work, but thinks it’s “seriously cute”.
I think I just won the Internets!
…yes. This is… yes. This is SO awesome. Or should I say… um… “Radical”?
No, that sounds stupid.
Jeff: “So this first bit involves a humpback whale who is also a rap artist.”
Me: “… You want me to draw a what now?”
Jeff: “It’ll be so cool!”
In all seriousness, this guy was an absolute blast to draw, and I cracked up at some of Jeff’s lines for him.
So that answers my question of whether the mini-storylines were from J&S or the artist of the week.
Are they speaking Papyrus?
Only insofar as my handwriting is similar to the font, I suppose. But no, the lettering is all done by hand.
(TUNE: “Ghetto Supastar”, Pras)
[CHORUS:]
Ocean superstar!
That is what you are!
From the mom we get
Best idea yet!
Hat and shades and bling,
Listen to you sing,
And we can rap with the humpbacks, uh huh!
With the humpbacks gonna chillax, uh huh!
Gotta get a grip, on a summer trip
Driving state to state, we can’t stay too late,
Interpol pursuin’, what’s Nera’s mom doin’?
I dunno, I don’t care, get to go everywhere!
Now we’re up in Maine, where we’ll ascertain
That life ain’t too frantic in the north Atlantic,
See the humpback there, risin’ in the air,
On the scene, lookin’ mean, ’cause it rhymes with baleen!
Got a mammal aquatic, bustin’ rhymes exotic,
On the d-low, we chillin’ on the high sea!
[repeat CHORUS}
I’ve got 99 problems but beaches aren’t one of them?
Please tell me Jonah has Wrenchie tethered to himself and that chain isn’t just attached to a wallet.
Well, he wouldn’t want the wrench going over the side, now would he?
(Many years of theatre have left me inclined towards tethered wrenches)
That’s what I thought. Funny, in six years as a carpenter and lighting engineer for a theater troupe, I never dropped a tool off a rig.
I hope you realise you’ve just jinxed yourself.
5 or 6 careers ago I worked as a Diver, and added several tools to my collection from those I found at the bottom of the harbor.
They’ve visited three states so far…forty-seven states to go.
You assume the Maserati isn’t some sort of Tardis. Which honestly, it may well be.
Or maybe it has a stainless steel exterior, to better distribute the output of the Flux Capacitor.
I just don’t want to follow the two of them adventuring through all fifty states at two weeks a state…I miss the gang who just got laid off from Skin Horse…
Don’t worry; the rest of the New England states are small enough to be handled in a single strip apiece. (Seriously. All of the rest can fit into Maine with room to spare.)
When they drew the borders for the states Out West and Off the Coast, they were obsessed with the idea that “all states should be created equal.” If that holds it *would* be one to two weeks per state.
Don’t confuse geographical size with plot potential. This here is Lovecraft country.
Andrew: Breaches.
Is there a larger version of the strip? Because GoComics really needs it so we can zoom in to read the words…
In the works. Thanks for your patience!
Panel 1:
Caption: MAINE
Jonah: This is the best “your mom” idea ever!
Vera: Mmm . . .
Panel 2:
Jonah: Sun, spray, and the soothing sound of humpback whale-song.
Panel 3:
Whale: Keepin’ it real from the subpolar gyre/My rhyme’s so hot they gon’ set you on fire./Cows climbin’ on me ‘cuz my breaches so clean/Got the krill in my grills ‘cuz they on my baleen.
Panel 4:
Jonah: I believe this behavior is called “chillaxing.”
Whale: Word up.
All caught up! 😀
Subolar gyre? Cool.
Those middle two Jonah-faces are amazing.
Thanks!
You don’t even want to know what the moose get up to.
Funny, I always pictured the great whales as more of opera and classical buffs.
Takes all kinds, I guess.
IIR, Gary Larson had one doing “Louie Louie”
That was a Disney cartoon where the whale sang opera…
So I’ve mostly lurked on the comments here but I’d love a chance to take a crack at doing a story in Shaenon’s absence, if there’s still any anticipated time left on the roster.
Also, you might not realize this, Jeffrey, but we go waaaaaaay back… (I’ll leave it to you to figure out who you knew me as before. Mwahaha.)
Hey, Fluffy! We’ll never turn down fan-art of any kind, and you’re obviously always welcome to submit anything you like to us, because we will coo over it like it were baby chicks. We are like that when it comes to fan work! That said, all the “guest slots” in Grillo Parlante are pretty much scripted out at this point. Thanks for your interest though.
As to where I’ve known you in the past… well, if you’ve changed handle and icon, that’s about the extent of my l33t haxx0r skillz. I’ve left a lot of communities behind me by now. 😀
One of my many problems is never being able to come up with ideas for what to do for fanart.
I am also apparently terrible at coming up with ways of dropping hints about our shared history that would make you want to try to figure it out by looking at my website or whatever. I guess I’m about as adept at giving directions as a blind pig.
Man, that takes me back. Good times.
