So, I googled “The Little House” to see if I was missing something, and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_House
Children’s book? Check. Little House? Check. Author–OH MY GIDDY AUNT.
I have so many theories, and none of them make sense. Given the authors of this strip, I think that means I’m on the right track.
What makes it worse is that that cast portrait shows a certain scientist in a dress that would have been quite appropriate for her namesake author. Now I’m really worried…
She also wrote Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, which traumatized me for years. (After working so hard on the building foundation, the steam shovel gets turned into a furnace, trapped in the basement.)
I love that so many of this strip’s characters are based on or inspired by children’s books (it never occurred to me that Dr. Lee was named after The Little House’s author). The gaming references are all over my head.
I picture some sort of terrifying SCP-type artifact (http://www.scp-wiki.net/ ), guarded generation after generation by…well, this is Skin Horse rather than SCP, so probably “weirdoes of dubious competence.”
So, the early years of the SCP, then.
“Agents who use The Empty House to fill their boss’ cubical with sentient foam peanuts will be assigned to Keter Duty.”
“Agents who attempt to flirt with the occupants of The Empty House will be fed to SCP-682”
“Dr. Clef should not be allowed to interact with The Empty House without three [REDACTED]s and a full cleaning staff with [DATA EXPUNGED] on hand.”
Every once in awhile a strip reminds me of how it felt first stumbling onto Skin Horse. I had no idea…
Tell me about it…
Based on Tip’s reaction I have to conclude that the Little House has mismatched curtains.
Tip’s scared of being turned into a real boy?
…Something about Unity’s eyes in those last two panels tells me there’s some kind of mental trauma involved in her *liking* the Little House…
I’m pretty sure that everything that Unity likes involves some kind of mental trauma.
Sure, but it’s usually happening to OTHER people.
You don’t have to look too deep to find that. Unity said it’s fun. That can’t end well for the rest.
I must agree with the helicopter.
I just hope there’s no prairie involved.
I just now realized that something’s been bothering me about Nick’s T-shirt: that 1up mushroom has no eyes!
Do you really want Nick’s current chest to be looking at you?

What about the author did you like or not like?
I think the name seems a little… familiar. Like, “Related Parties on the cast page” familiar?
What makes it worse is that that cast portrait shows a certain scientist in a dress that would have been quite appropriate for her namesake author. Now I’m really worried…
Virginia Lee Burton is your aunt?
Ooh! I have that book!
She also wrote Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, which traumatized me for years. (After working so hard on the building foundation, the steam shovel gets turned into a furnace, trapped in the basement.)
Well, it IS written by Virginia Lee (Burton)
I’ve read The Little House; now I’m afraid to see what they do to her, it was a very nice story, well, parts gloomy, nice ending.
I love that so many of this strip’s characters are based on or inspired by children’s books (it never occurred to me that Dr. Lee was named after The Little House’s author). The gaming references are all over my head.
(TUNE: “Lady Madonna”, The Beatles)
Dr. Collodi
Built the Little House!
Tip just spilled his coffee and stained his blouse!
Dr. Collodi
Pleases Unity!
She looks so excited and full of squee!
Tip is looking panicky, he’s freakin’!
He’ll pack extra ammo for his gun!
Unity, she wants a three-day weekend!
She’s having fun!
Dr. Collodi,
What’s this all about?
Thanks to Jeff and Shaenon, we’ll soon find out!

I’m going to assume that Tip is being sarcastic, and is as clueless as the rest of us about this.
But U.N.I.T.Y. smiling that broadly at the mention of it? I’m guessing we’re at the sub-nuclear bomb level of trouble and climbing.
something tells me that the little house is a ranch home that upon closer inspection has no right angles.
It’s full of stairs!
or something similarly eldritch/lovecrafty, can’t cook burnt meat you know.
Sure you can do a long weekend Unity, you just have to set up a cliffhanger first 🙂
So I was doing some sifting through the Narbonic archive for an especially menacing Dave it took some doing but I settled for Dave’s threat to the Dave conspiracy” http://www.webcomicsnation.com/shaenongarrity/narbonic/redirect.php?type=comic&installment_ID=49331&whichbutton=next ” . Anyhow while reading through the end I find out Artie’s type is Sergio, linguist + slim + Latin male, but I recoiled at the squick.
Tip, he up and told you it was the Little House. Why are you so surprised now?

Your archive-fu is strong!
To be fair he said “a” little house, not “the” Little House.
This strip led to me being reminded of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. That is excellent.
