Why would she care to? She not being mad was always Anasigma’s assertion, not her own. She just followed the company line. I don’t think it ever mattered to her personally.
Definitely True Love. Quite a few of the girls I’d dated would definitely have reacted badly if I had told them I’d installed a wireless transmitter inside their brain without bothering to tell them. ^_~
Things are kinda different if they find out you scooped out their brain and didn’t retain their body before they even find out you’re a smokin’ hot Asian chick in real life. You’ve got to set up expectations in advance, and then be somewhat less disturbing than anticipated in practice.
Dr. Lee enhanced his brain, Tigerlily enhanced his body – give him a shield and freeze him for a few decades, and he might give Capt. America a run for his money.
The distinction is that Helen intentionally misled Dave. That’d piss anybody off. I don’t think Virginia intended to mislead Nick, but rather she simply never got around to telling him. I mean, they have been kind of busy these past few weeks.
I kinda think so too. One of the first things Virginia said to Nick when he woke up in human form was that she promised to get his real body back. They’re short a helicopter now, and acquiring another one is apt to be opportunistic, so there are real advantages to having a human body that can take over on short notice. (Insert blushes here.)
Can she be a scream that fills his dreams
And ruins his fantasy?
Oh, no, it isn’t a scream, it’s Dr. Lee.
Can she be a prize in deep disguise
And leaves behind some debris?
Oh, no, it isn’t a prize, it’s Dr. Lee.
His brain was quiescent,
Swear filter unkeyed
And now a transceiver,
Believe her, Nick, it’ll thrill her.
Isn’t it a curse, from bad to worse,
That haunts him to a degree?
He knows it isn’t a curse, it’s Dr. Lee.
In addition to remote helicoptering, I’m making the guess that she’s put one in her own head so they can communicate via wifi and she can join him in virtual.
Virginia: So, I got you something.
Nick: What, more people trying to kill me?
Virginia. No, of course not. We’re going to keep getting those for free. Go ahead, open it.
:opening sounds:
Nick: It’s a… leather jacket, a really big tablet, and… sunglasses?
Virginia: :flushed: YES.
Nick: Yeah, you lost me.
Virginia: It’s a netrunner starting set, Nick. Because you’re cyberpunk now.
Nick: Umm.
Virginia: SO cyberpunk.
Did you do this before or after you and Gavotte were picked up by Annex One, Dr. Lee?
I would guess it was when she was putting Nick’s brain into the clone. I mean who wouldn’t?
“Do that thing again where you convince us you’re not mad.”
Why would she care to? She not being mad was always Anasigma’s assertion, not her own. She just followed the company line. I don’t think it ever mattered to her personally.
She did once refer to herself as a “sane scientist”, but she’s just in denial.
Like I said, followed the company line
I have to admit, this is the maddest we’ve ever seen her. Forget the science, it’s the blithe confidence.
My theory is that she’s a mad scientist with a specialty in making things that sane people can replicate.
Thank you! That’s what I’ve been saying for years!
Agreed.
We’ve never seen her speak with a madness font. She’s probably crazy, but that doesn’t mean she’s capital-M Mad.
She’s confident that he doesn’t have any common sense bc she removed that too
Bold of you to assume it was there in the first place.
She just knows because when she went in to remove it, she found it was already missing.
This.^
Remember what Helen told Dave about nerds having an imbalanced sense of coolness vs. self-preservation?
And that’s why they like each other! 🙂
I knew it! The wifi signal Aimee picked up was his own!
Definitely True Love. Quite a few of the girls I’d dated would definitely have reacted badly if I had told them I’d installed a wireless transmitter inside their brain without bothering to tell them. ^_~
I’d just be mad that I could have been using it the whole time. I mean, I HATE not being able to use all the bells and whistles.
I mean if I didn’t know about it. Tell me before or after, just TELL ME so I can USE the fun things.
OK, Lady E! I promise that I will. ^_~
Things are kinda different if they find out you scooped out their brain and didn’t retain their body before they even find out you’re a smokin’ hot Asian chick in real life. You’ve got to set up expectations in advance, and then be somewhat less disturbing than anticipated in practice.
Oh boy. So she can stimulate his pain and pleasure centers with the push of a button! No wonder she looks sheepish in the third panel.
But I wonder if either of them is yet aware of the physical enhancements Dr. Jones made while cloning his body?
Well, Nick HAS mentioned that he was originally circumcised, so….probably?
Dr. Lee enhanced his brain, Tigerlily enhanced his body – give him a shield and freeze him for a few decades, and he might give Capt. America a run for his money.
Nah, but makes for a good line.
In the fourth panel, I can’t decide if Dr. Lee’s find look is for the man she loves or her favorite experiment?
“fond look” – *sigh*
It can be both…
Definitely both.
Is there a difference?
Narbon-verse, so a negative answer seems well-supported.
You say that like those terms mean two different things. If we learned anything from Helen Narbon…
Dave kinda minded. At least till he settled down and didn’t mind.
The distinction is that Helen intentionally misled Dave. That’d piss anybody off. I don’t think Virginia intended to mislead Nick, but rather she simply never got around to telling him. I mean, they have been kind of busy these past few weeks.
“Because I’m starting up a company that sells wifi-based popup ads, and I needed a test market.”
Yow. Ginny has admitted to being technically evil, but if so she’s nowhere close to that evil.
*shudder*
“Did I get a virus?”
“Uh, no.”
“Did I get four hundred thousand viruses?”
“…Yes.”
“I pre-installed Sophos, but I forgot to buy the subscription, so your virus definitions are probably a teensy bit outdated.”
Thinking it might be there to enable him to be the helicopter again without having to take his brain back out of his skull.
Good point. This allows him to be a helicopter *and* a man…
Oh, also, tranceiver can be reversed by using a deceiver. If you want two-way wireless communications, you need to wire in an “s” there.
Are you complaining about the spelling? It’s not incorrect. It’s just not the more common spelling.
.. she gave him a way to remotely control electronic devices.
I’m -honestly- trying not to think the (+18) uses that has but.. nope, can’t help it XD
Ah, we’re back to the Narbonic form of old
Like many men, he’s just a ‘fixer-upper’. And, now somewhat enhanced, he teeters on the verge of a Great Awareness of his very own* SECRET POWERS.
*Installed by his own True Love, all done very circumspectly and now beginning to MANIFEST…..ta-dum.
Born to be a henchman. And so the bond grows stronger and a new tale of scientist-subject romance and experimentation begins!
And will wind up with the apprentice controlling the master? Will the Tin Man control the Witch of the North in the end? So the saga continues.
Having sense is overrated anyway, Nick.
Lee.

—from “Love in Bloom,” Leo Robin / Ralph Rainger.
Is the remote universal or proprietary?
In addition to remote helicoptering, I’m making the guess that she’s put one in her own head so they can communicate via wifi and she can join him in virtual.
I think Wifi would be too easily intercepted, so something more direct, or at least less detectable.
That would be the ultimate in Mad science (ok, fine… Mad science actually has no limits) – operating on your own brain!
Virginia: So, I got you something.
Nick: What, more people trying to kill me?
Virginia. No, of course not. We’re going to keep getting those for free. Go ahead, open it.

Nick: Umm.
Virginia: SO cyberpunk.
Nick: (stares at tablet) Y’know, I’ve never ridden a motorcycle before . . .
Virginia: (barely suppresses a squee)
Nick looks so defeated in that last panel
