It’s worth remembering that he’s probably older than anyone else in the main cast by decades and still hasn’t achieved the same level of (human-normal) maturity.
He was created to appeal to children. Twisted children, perhaps, but children nonetheless. So as Candace said, he’s not able to grow up. He will forever have the maturity of a kid who’s just barely entered puberty.
I work with children. 5-year-olds are loyal to their friends. And I would describe most of the children I work with as having a heart of gold.
And in the strip you linked, the main reason he didn’t want the VR deleted wasn’t even about loyalty. Aimee was in there, and he had a major crush on her.
I am forced to agree with you, awgiedawgie. Baron Mistycorn is evidently more mature in VR Whimsy World than the behavior he exhibits in meatspace would lead one to expect. Thus he has not yet reached the pinnacle of his mental and emotional development.
In this unicorn,
He comes on deceiving,
And telling lies on us all.
And he always swore with swear words,
As we went through Whimsey World withdrawal.
Damn, I recall this unicorn.
Leavin’ the Skin-Horse pool,
Flyin’ my craft after AG-I.
This guy did the fueling,
Workin’ for Whimsey was not a breeze.
And after all this, he’s a jailbird
In Jones’s Seattle attack.
It’s now that the jack-goat is spared.
With negotiations in back,
He talks the same smack,
And everything’s the same back with this unicorn.
Nothing but letdowns and lying back with this unicorn.
Nothing but letdowns and lying back with this unicorn.
With this unicorn.
With Virtual Aimee, he was all undone.
Actin’ so noble,
Makin’ no trouble,
Actin’ sentimental and so gentle, but no fun.
Being nothing but letdowns and lying back with this unicorn.
Nothing but letdowns and lying back with this unicorn…

I like Nick’s attitude, and it seems to show some personal growth for him too. He still doesn’t like Tip, but unlike Baron he’s able to pierce through what makes him uncomfortable and see the true narcissistic jerk underneath.
Aww, it’s just like friendship except one of them hates the other!
Nick, it’s still not too late to kick him in the jimmy.
Wait… does Baron even have a jimmy?
Virginia might be able to install one specifically designed for that purpose.
I suppose Tigerlily Jones could do it too, as long as it’s spring-powered.
And depending on how the Baron acts around her, Dr. Lee just might do so
And it would be rainbow-colored, sentient, and prone to giving him jive.
Wow, Nick’s really grown up, hasn’t he? Unfortunately, I’m not sure Baron Mistycorn is able to grow up. After all, he was made that way.

I once worked with someone whose motto was “You’re only young once, but you can be immature forever.”
Baron Mistycorn reminds me a lot of the baby from Roger Rabbit.
You aren’t giving Baron enough credit. He’s very loyal and under the defensive crassness hides a heart of gold!
None of that is a sign of maturity.

I’d forgotten the crush: http://skin-horse.com/comic/see_here/

And if you tap on his chest you can hear it clank.
Pretty Nick hasn’t changed his opinion about Tip at all – he’s just pointing out to Baron that he somehow even worse than Tip is.
“Pretty -sure- Nick…”
Oi vey…
LOL!
Well, I figured Tip and Tigerlily would have…negotiations.
…yes, quid pro quo and all that…
Maybe they did, but the authors decided to spare our blushes
How can Biscuit be so flighty and so well-grounded at the same time?

…a dreary song for a dreary filk about a dreary unicorn.
…good match!

*snicker*
Sometimes I wonder if Nick really hates Tip as much as he lets on.
Nah. Nick doesn’t hate anyone.
Then again, other than Virginia, Nick doesn’t really like anyone, either.
