Not completely. They can see two primary colors (blue and yellow) to our three (blue, yellow and red), albeit muted and washed-out due to having less than 15% as many cones as we do. But they do see some color.
Whatever is going on here, Sweetheart is picking it up too. Just not as strongly.
That, and non-enhanced dogs don’t seem to actually use their color vision for anything, it’s an evolutionary leftover. So, while they can tell colors apart, they generally don’t care. 🙂
Humans see in red, green and blue; yellow is just the product between green and red. They say dogs see in blue and yellow because they can’t tell the difference between red and green. Yellow is not a primary color when light/vision is concerned.</petPeeve>
Which is to say that since dogs can’t differentiate between red and green, it’s accurate to say they see in blue and yellow, seeing as how we are using human words to describe non-human vision in human terms.
Due to *your* three, baseline human. I’m standing over here with Van Gogh – you can see a lot when you’ve only got two primary colors. (My mutant power is an inability to see purple.)
Yeah, if you’re going with highlights like that I think you want a color that compliments the base dress rather than the highlights, so they stand out. What do I know about fashion, though?
Color combo seems alright to me… although, really, it’s not black. Sweetheart’s ear is black. That seems either a dark blue (like Navy blue) or a dark green.
I’m still not sure about the flat colors on top of the ink shading, though. And everything seems a little oversaturated, although I presume that’s due to the sickeningly bright interior of the Little House.
So.
1. Are the colours representative of a colour-unrelated sensory change which will be further elaborated on?
2. Is this fourth-wall-breaking?
3. Have they actually all been seeing the world in black and white only this whole time?
They haven’t been seeing in b&w the whole time…. The strip was merely done in b&w. No telling how long they’ve had this color artist on hand though and decided to sit on it until this “revelation”.
From a technical standpoint (apologies for nitpicking), I think slightly less compressed JPEGs might be advisable — there’s artifacting around the color bits and the text quality seems to be suffering a bit compared to the grayscale PNGs, which at least for me impacts readability a bit.
You do realize that they always used JPEGs even when the comic was greyscale, right? They were never PNGs.
(I personally never understood why people kept using JPEGs for relatively small images after PNGs appeared — the minuscule size difference can’t be worth the artifacts! But that’s just me, I guess, because people keep using them.)
Size/compression notwithstanding, jpegs were designed for images with thousands of color variations – photos to be specific. They aren’t ideal for solid colors such as we see here. But they’re understood by even elderly software and so continue to be used somewhat universally.

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned this, but Unity has a theme song. Check out the Punch Brothers’ “My Sweet Little Patchwork Girlfriend.” http://youtu.be/J7WmGQ_VemU . Best line “I promised not to mess around with other girls unless they’re her.”

Color,
I’m in color
And my princess dress
Is pink as pink can be
Oh that horsed-up movie
Did something to me
That those Whimsey fishmongers
Did not forsee.
Color,
I’m in color
And my curlicues are turquoise,
Now I see!
Yes, my dress looks very
Fabulous on me
This perception shift
is going to make me squee!
Oh
We love to go on missions
and to work for lots of bees
But that doesn’t thrill us
Half as much
as our new shading spree
Color,
We’re in color
And it’s striking most of all
On Unity
And we all have seen what we
Came here to see
Yes, and now we’re all in color
Even technicolor
Yes we’re all in color now here at Whimsy
Whoops, ok, there will need to be a followup version in which i a) pick a spelling of Whimsy and stick to it, and b) write another verse incorporating Gussie and “Skreeeeeeeee!!!!”

Sweetheart, the voice of reason!
That’s cause dogs are color-blind.

All the grass is meat-colored! All of it!
As always, picking a single set of colors is oversimplifying 🙂

Ahh Zee wonderful color of innocence. Now lets set up some good old black heartened violence and chaos to fix back to the way they where!
With all due respect to Tip…black and teal is not that good of a color combination.
Don’t be silly, the teal swirls are glorious. (The green top I’m less sure about, but that’s a different matter.)
Yeah, if you’re going with highlights like that I think you want a color that compliments the base dress rather than the highlights, so they stand out. What do I know about fashion, though?
I dunno, navy blue and teal is pretty nice.
As someone raised in New Mexico, I feel the need to point out that it can go wonderfully with turquoise jewelry.
Yay, NM! (From a Cloudcroft resident)

I’m right there with you.
…Oh. Oh, that’s clever, Shaenon.
The more some things change, the more some stay the same.

Well, when Chris defused the nuclear bomb, he had to choose between three shades of red, so they definitely know what color is.

Maybe the world they inhabit really is black and white, but Dr. Collodi’s film made them imagine the colors.
Has Tip bleached his hair? It used to be more of a sandy brown. Did he think he could somehow have more fun?

It’s true, Tip; it does.

I don’t think the dress will go away if you ignore it, Sweetheart.
And I don’t think she’d be as happy if it did as she thinks she’d be.
Why would any want it to go away, it is fabulous! could do with some pearls though
And, besides, does Tip go away if you ignore him.
(TUNE: “A Whole New World” from Disney’s Aladdin, Menken & Rice)
We just opened our eyes,
Feeling just a bit strange now!
Now we’ve started to change how
We perceive the world, it seems!
This is quite a surprise!
Feelings, now we detect ’em!
Now we feel the full spectrum
Of our inner thoughts and dreams!
A whole new way,
A whole new paradigm today!
Now, it’s ourselves we see
Quite diff’rently!
A change in our perception!
A whole new way,
No longer black and white and grey!
Now that we’re colorful,
Not drab and dull,
Let’s just accept the change without a fuss …
A whiole new way
To look at us …
Now even more,
More than before,
Tip’s fabulous!
Yep, they’ve been exposed to the Whimsydrome signal.
“…the retina of the mind’s eye.”
FABULOUS!!!!!!!!
I’ve been waiting to see what Monday was going to look like. I’m excited, and a little bit nervous.

Neat song, Nomi!
Exactly how much more fabulous could the dress possibly have become in going from black and white to the color of a 1991 Ford Tempo?
Nobody yet has mentioned that Nick is pretty in pink?
Why is nobody Else gushing over the fact that we can see the posthuman rainbow that is my Kandy kluge’s gorgeous patch work skin?

Because Nick is fairly masculine identified and might take offense to it. Plus, that is not him that’s the drone he’s piloting.
Darn it my posts are hiccuping, how do I delete?
(In horror movie villian voice) There is no delete, there is no edit, there is only “post”…
And “reply”, I suppose.
Why no lyrics to “I Can See Clearly Now the Rain is Gone”?
You know, this storyline started on April Fool’s Day. I’m just saying.
Nice try, but can we please go back to white? (ducks)

For shame! Please, Irving Berlin! Don’t credit one of dozens of those who recorded it, credit the author!
Sorry! Thanks for the correction, i was going from the credits on the lyrics page i found. You’d think i’d have known that, even.
What does it say about us that we have such a lively discussion about skirt designs just because the comic is in color?
Answer: Shaenon Garrity’s mind-control device is active.
It’s a curious choice of topic. From the interviews I’ve read, I’m not sure Shaenon even owns a skirt.
Color is awesome!!!!

I thought the style looked familiar 🙂
