A single large robot is very intimidating, but the thing that makes it so intimidating is also a massive strategic flaw. If your giant robot isn’t available you’re completely exposed. A thousand small robots may not pack as much individual punch, but they can swarm and if a few get taken out by enemy fire or maintenance, you still have the majority of your power base still available.
Also, if something blows up half of your robot army, the other half can still carry on just fine, whereas if something blows up half of your giant robot, that could well cripple it completely.
