    What does ‘Byzantine’ mean in regards to plotting? Their predecessors the WRE and their successors the Ottomans have long and illustrious histories of plotting, but the only real plotting I can remember on the part of the Byzantines involved several schisms and a bunch of dudes named Palaiologos.

      It is (or at least has been) agreed by most historians that the Byzantines raised needless intricacy to a high art. A Byzantine system, usually used in terms of intrigue or administration, is hopelessly convoluted with too many participants and connections for anyone to keep track of.
