In retrospect, I wonder if HT had a plan to deal with an inevitably-quite-unhappy Helen and Dave when they found out what happened to Artie. I suspect not. One does not plan for a Narbon; one merely attempts to survive and hope they get bored or distracted.
And when their plan is “brutally murder the person who wronged you and your family” they don’t tend to get bored or distracted.
Besides, Dave and Helen would be the least of HT’s concerns. Remember, Mell likes Artie too.
Mell would be a merciful event. No matter how creative she tried to be she would still be merciful compared to what either of the Davenports came up with should they decide to be creative about Artie being harmed. ^_^
I’m not at all convinced that Mell would be merciful, even compared to Helen or Dave. I shudder to think of what any of those three could conceive as recompense for harming Artie. Mell might even go so far as to employ the aid of Helen Sr., and the potential of that duo boggles the mind.
I don’t think the argument being made is that Mell would act in a manner in which she was seen to have displayed mercy. I think, rather, that the point is that falling into Mells hands would be an indication of a Merciful Providence; when compared to what would happen if Dave or Helen got their hands on Artie’s killer.
Being a mad social scientist, Mell’s idea of punishment is probably nasty, brutish and short. Hellen, on the other hand, wouldn’t allow you the escape of death. At least, not permanently.
You’re assuming that Mell’s punishment would result in death, and fairly quickly and permanently. I’m not. Of the three of them, Dave would probably be the less torturous, but that wouldn’t matter, since Helen would take over anyway. I believe Mell would be just as bad as Helen. And if she did happen to kill them, she’d just have Helen revive them for more fun. Artie was like a son to Helen, but she was like a little brother and a best friend to Mell. And if Mell ever ran out of ideas (as if), she’s got Caliban with several millenia of ideas to use.
Clearly HT is well aware of Artie’s augments. So being unconcerned with Artie being able to lift a car implies HT has enhanced abilities of his own. Which speaks volumes about Sweetheart…
HT doesn’t need any enhancements to take Artie out. HT is a tiger. Artie may be stronger than the average human, but any full-grown tiger could slice him to bits with one swipe.

“I go to my grave with no regrets!” Right on, Artie!

A nice rug, perhaps – in perpetual, undying agony…

Considering we’ve seen what Mell does when Artie dies… Yeah, that would be *bad*.
