good ol’ french names in english language. (gros-bon-ange translates to “fat-nice-angel”, btw)
I thought it meant “large good angel”. Then again, they never covered Cajun Bayou in high school French.
Saying somebody is large is a polite way of saying they’re fat.
Found a source. Large good angel, the part of the spirit responsible for biological function. As opposed to ti-bon-ange, (from petite bon ange), little good angel, the bit of the spirit responsible for personality, etc.
