Neither is “velociraptor”, for some reason. How weird is that? “Velocipede” yeah, but not “velociraptor”. When was the last time you ever actually heard anyone say “velocipede” (not counting this one)? But people talk about velociraptors all the time. Admittedly its kind of a shâ–ˆtty dictionary.
I remember when I was a wee child there was a joke in a joke book I was reading that hinged on someone mistaking the word “encyclopedia” for “velocipede” and it just completely failed for me because I had never encountered the word “velocipede”. Among other reasons.
It puzzles me to this day, because the book was very clearly pitched at my age range, but it made this one really odd assumption about what words a child in the late 20th century would know.
If rationality means not playing in mud it can take a hike!
Bah! “Rationality” isn’t even in my dictionary.

For that matter, how many people even know what a velocipede is?
(Also, “Velociraptors on Velocipedes” would be a great title for… something.)

Or pennyfarthing, for that matter. Spell-check at least recognizes velocipede. But not velociraptor.
