It’s one of the many ways that the modern, patriarchal, heteronormatively and cisexually oriented society demeans transvestism and transexuality. Men who wear women’s clothes are called “Nancy boys”, “ladyboys”, and “wusses”, with major negative connotations; while women who wear men’s clothes are called “tomboys” and “dragon ladies”, with mostly positive connotations. Western culture, and most other cultures (especially Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese cultures) greatly value men over women, so women who aspire to masculinity are tacitly accepted, even lauded, while men who aspire to femininity are ridiculed and derided.
I agree. I’d blame monotheism, but the Greeks and Romans were polytheists and they were sexist as all get out. Chinese and Japanese have a mixture of animism, ancestor worship, and polythiesm, and they still have rampant sexism.
Where did humans go wrong? Mayhaps in letting almost all of their religions be created by a bunch of self-satisfied & uptight old men? Speaking as a less uptight but somewhat cynical “old” (61) man, it certainly seems that way most of the time….
