The Japanese couldn’t even pronounce “pound” without sticking an extra vowel on the end.
yeah – but then, it’s pretty hard to do it without another vowel in English, no?

That is where the term came from. The British currency was named the Pound because it was backed by silver. One £ was initially valued as exactly one lb. of silver.
