Alanis Morriset destroyed the word irony. Before her it never would have occured to me that anyone might possibly be unclear on what it meant, and I was happier not knowing that.
Machete – tips use is extremely disappointing, but it’s better than alanis morrisete.
This from American Heritage Dictionary via Wiki: “It is often included in definitions of irony not only that incongruity is present but also that the incongruity must reveal some aspect of human vanity or folly.”
I think she’s still in the ballpark.

And one of the criterion for a pelagic bird is not merely that it’s avian but also that it lives a significant portion of its life in on the ocean. A whale spends a significant portion of its life on the ocean. But a whale is not in the ball park of a pelagic bird.
If ‘You can’t keep spending that nickel’ is Jeffrey’s, he’s brilliant. More brilliant, whatever. If not, at least it’s a lovely phrase that I’m adding to my vocabulary.
I have to agree, that line blew me away. I assumed it must be a saying common to some part of the country I’d never managed to hear because it’s now stuck in my head. Sooner or later I’ll find just the right opportunity to say it and sound so bad-ass.
I think for a good definition of irony as well as what is not irony, you need only watch the Futurama episode – The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings. Of course, I think modern usage has shifted towards irony being synonymous with situational irony.
Really, is this the best time for this discussion? After all, the tidal wave of swamp vegetation is about to fall on them. There are probably more vital things to consider.
Actually, that’s what we call “dramatic irony”. Not your garden variety irony, but definitely irony. Although I suppose in this case it would be of the garden variety.
Oooooh, Well played sweetheart, it works on at least two levels.
I’m stuck at level one on this one.
Spend a penny = go to the bathroom + you can’t keep going back to the well: a toilet is a well to a dog? Not sure where the price increase comes from.
I was thinking more, “You already used that excuse”, but I don’t recall a first time.
iron-y. Versus nickel. Right?
I’m guessing Machete-Tip learned her definition of “ironic” from Alanis Morissette..
Came here to make this comment, found someone else already had the same thought.
Great minds think alike!
Isn’t “Irony” the opposite of “Wrinkly”?

‘I don’t know what you mean by “glory”,’ Alice said.
Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. ‘Of course you don’t — till I tell you. I meant “there’s a nice knock-down argument for you!”‘
‘But “glory” doesn’t mean “a nice knock-down argument”,’ Alice objected.
‘When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’
‘The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’
‘The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.’
“Isn’t It Ironic?” is a song about irony in which several examples are given of things that are not at all ironic.
This is, itself, ironic. (a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result)
Alanis Morissette may be more brilliant than we think.
Or, as Ed Byrne put it, “The only ironic thing about that song is that it’s called Ironic and it’s written by a woman who doesn’t know what irony is!”
I feel like people here might find this enjoyable:

But if the bird parks its balls in the ocean, the whale . . . ? Nah, not working.
One of the fundamental truths of life, Sweetheart.
If the Biomass lets, I’m sure they’ll iron it all out.
That last panel is some good backstory-writing, right there.

That line is so very Jeff.

I can’t even tell what’s supposed to be ironic. Is it that she said “is that all you got?” and it wasn’t, in fact, all the biomass had got?
Indeed.
And for tomorrow’s lesson, the proper use of the term “beg the question”.
And in doing so we beg nothing. Which is not in any way at all ironic.

I miss Irony Chan. Anybody know what she’s doing lately?
Apparently writing a Captain America fanfic (assuming this is the same person): http://archiveofourown.org/works/4959730/chapters/11388898
Now I am very tempted to go archive-binge Get Medieval. Darn you, Internet stranger with good taste!
Any word as to whether the Intergalactic Tea Shop will get a story continuation?

Oh! The irony!
Talking is a free action
A metal pun with irony and nickel?
