I thought that portrait looked a bit more like Mama Narbon. Note the opaque lenses. And the look that demands pink wine over a hundred years before it was invented.
It’s later revealed that a Madblood was involved in the Old War. But it wasn’t the Madblood from the Victorian story from Narbonic, and he certainly wasn’t the only Mad Scientist involved.
Let us contemplate: Moustachio lost his legs, hands, any other appendages with sole – or dual, in his case – exeptions of moustaches, and all his memories prior classified date to boot. In other words, he is hollow paralyzed effigy of his former self.
Seems pretty much corresponding with all that “destroyed” thing.
“WHAT HELL HATH MAD SCIENCE WROUGHT?!?”-Dr. Dinosaur, Atomic Robo (…said while being chased by his latest creation, Futursaurus Rex, a dinosaur evolved/mutated in the Large Hadron Collider…an evolution that apparently involved growing rocket launchers and the ability to cough up Mausers into its tiny hands……..yeah, Atomic Robo is the story of The New War as created by a talking hyperintelligent velociraptor)
We see there, on the silver screen,
The story of the Old War, human versus machine!
He made some weapons, now I’m wanting one!
Aw, I just wanna ray gun,
I just wanna ray gun!
A New War … comes eventually,
Collodi says he’s sorry he won’t be there to see!
He’s gonna miss his chance to join in the fun,
But still, he made a ray gun!
A-a-and I just wanna ray —
That’s all I really wa-a-a-ant!
Just o-o-o-one!
Set to kill and not to stun!
Aw, I just wanna ray gu-un!
Ye-a-a-ah, I just wanna ray gun!
(We … just wanna … wanna ray
Gun … we wanna … wanna ray …)
We want gamma, we want gamma!
We want gamma, we want gamma!
We want gamma, we want gamma … [repeat, fade out]
I’m sort of with Mouse on this one. I don’t think he’s trying to start the new war, but I think he subconsciously wants it to happen and that’s consciously manifesting itself as a desire for preparedness in a way likely to cause it.
Well, I guess there’s nothing to say that his preparations couldn’t have started a slow (or fast) ball moving… but I don’t think he’s actively trying to precipitate one.
Nobody wants to have this discussion less than I, but we all know that certain things have to be done promptly at the onset of the revolution. I had hoped we could keep our team intact, minus Tip of course, but given Nick’s background and worrisome affinities for his human creator and humanoid avatar, we must consider his loyalty questionable, and we must do what is necessary to protect ourselves from the danger he represents.
I was sorta disappointed when the books from Herbert’s notes came out – too much character development – not enough sociopolitics of the anti-machine movement, or how the machines took over in the first place. Rest of the prequel novels were okay – just that aspect of the Butlerian Jihad was lacking.
One, do you suppose that the nuclear source for the Little House actually leads to one of those guns? Doc Collodi didn’t say how (*big*) they were, now did he?
Two, if [one] is true, then they definitely should get U.N.I.T.Y. out of there. Having her around normal ordinance is scary enough.
Three, depending on the connection between Nick and his drone, and the storage capacity in Nick’s hardware, and the bandwidth between him and Annex One, it might be a good idea for them to stop the movie and have him/her/it start scanning everything in that archive and sending back home. Anasigma is going to be coming after those records hard and they need the data someplace safe(ish) for later review.
Ah. I figured that’s what the “Old War” might be — between creators and created. Ancient stuff, that. Titans and Olympians. Parents versus children. And, of course — Frankenstein and monster.
I long to blame the old war on Victorian Helen, transplanted Dr. Pin, and Victorian Dave….
A man can dream…
What’s stopping you?
I believe that she’s there, first panel, middle right side.
I thought that portrait looked a bit more like Mama Narbon. Note the opaque lenses. And the look that demands pink wine over a hundred years before it was invented.
I dunno, the hair looks more like Beta (is Victorian Helen still called Beta?), but I can’t really tell. I hope it’s one of them, though.
I certainly wouldn’t put it past them…. :p
*SPOILERS* It’s later revealed that the war was caused by Victorian Madblood.
So you were somewhat right!
It’s later revealed that a Madblood was involved in the Old War. But it wasn’t the Madblood from the Victorian story from Narbonic, and he certainly wasn’t the only Mad Scientist involved.
Children of the Atom-Blaster.
Ray guns! Yays!
“The children were destroyed”. Moustachio is evidence that this turns out not to be the case.
I suspect he meant it in a general sense, not in an absolute sense. That is, some survived, most didn’t.
Let us contemplate: Moustachio lost his legs, hands, any other appendages with sole – or dual, in his case – exeptions of moustaches, and all his memories prior classified date to boot. In other words, he is hollow paralyzed effigy of his former self.

None of which stopped him from almost blowing up Annex One. And that was even before he got little arms (scree scree).

“BEHOLD! AN ORDINARY MOTORIST!” is still one of the best lines ever. (The close second is anything else Dr. Dinosaur has ever said.)
Futursaurus Rex? I thought I had all the Atomic Robo issues. Which issue is this from? I need my Dr. Dinosaur fix…
It’s from one of the annual Free Comic Book Day issues.
You can find online as well.
You can find IT online as well.
Well, shoot! If he made some keen ray guns then what more could reasonably be expected of him? ^_~
(TUNE: “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, Cyndi Lauper)

Yeah, I’ll be singing that one all day.
Can’t you just see this as a duet for Mell and Unity?
Cannot *UN*see!!!
I mentally heard that EXACTLY in Cyndi Lauper’s voice.
Yup. Same old war, come round again.
Said found evidence being the aforementioned Moustachio memory cylinder?
@Evil Midnight Lurker: Actually, that sounded to me like it’s Collodi himself that is/was trying to start up a new War, under the banner of the old.
Not how I understand it. Looks to me like he expects it again and believes in being prepared.
I’m sort of with Mouse on this one. I don’t think he’s trying to start the new war, but I think he subconsciously wants it to happen and that’s consciously manifesting itself as a desire for preparedness in a way likely to cause it.

To secure peace is to make a bunch of ray guns.
“and we made a keen gun, for the people who are still alive”
And the science gets done, and you make a neat gun, for the people who are still alive.
His background? Eliminate him because he’s a gamer?
I’ll have nothing to do with such a narrow-minded revolution…
I’m pretty sure he’s referring to how Nick was born human.
Slow down there, Robespierre. You need to win the revolution before you can start getting paranoid about counterrevolutionaries.
And something tells me the entire team would want there to be no war, anyway….
These keen ray guns, they will be your next kickstater project, yes?
Dr. Collodi’s description of the Old War sounds an awful lot like the Butlerian Jihad.
Same song, 100th verse.

Ah. I figured that’s what the “Old War” might be — between creators and created. Ancient stuff, that. Titans and Olympians. Parents versus children. And, of course — Frankenstein and monster.
And so it is as it always has been.
We grow to fear our children for what they will become.
And we either learn to embrace the fear, or to quash it.
