Evan Kennedy (kneefers) says: I’ve been wondering, does this take place in the same world as Narbonic? Sort of a Shaenon-Garrity-universe?
Brand Willis (brandyllyn) says: The lion’s use of ‘cowardice’ makes me think we’re not in Kansas anymore.
Steve Ford (sford) says: When a sentient being with lots of very sharp pointy stabby things asks one a question, one would be wise to answer without a lot of day dreaming.
Pete (westrider) says: The Lion’s dialogue in Panel 2 just screams “Mad Science” at me. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some sort of connection, but it could just as well be separate.
I mean, besides the names. And characterizations. And chapter title.
But first in the SCRIPT, maybe?
Fun Fact that was what brought me to Skin Horse — I hadn’t read Narbonic, I just ran into something talking about how ridiculously many Oz references this one webcomic had, and I thought “well I HAVE to read THAT…”.
(And after a bit I read Narbonic alongside it, by keeping up with the Director’s Commentary.)
But, like, in only four panels we have:
– A hilarious jump cut
– A deeper introduction to the world of Skin Horse and the creations of mad science
– An exploration of Tip’s character, namely his deeper flaws (which is simultaneously a hilarious juxtaposition and helps humanize him).
– A clear shoutout to Oz, and thus and introduction to one of the core themes.
– And Shaenon showing off her masterful skill with body language with Leo in panel one and Tip in panel four. I mean, heck, just the way Tip has his legs in panel one is a wonderful bit of characterization.
(But seriously, how do you draw a lion reclining on a therapist’s couch pouring out his life story, but sans couch?)

Lion’s right. It ain’t cowardice, it’s survival smarts.
Tip has gone to la-la land, I think.
I can tell that I’m going to enjoy the humour in this one!
Does this count as the first Oz reference?
