Right. I’m thinking superheroes are like annoying celebrities who get all the credit for doing very little of the work and creating a whole lotta bother for everyone else in the… less ‘normal’ segment of folks.
I dunno. The fact is that Shelby did a fair amount of Skin Horse’s work for them while lurking in the background and Panoptica at least seemed the conscientious type. @_@
I’m talking perception and attitude. If you’re a baseline human, superheroes are generally a good thing for you. But if you’re eligible to be a Skin Horse client? Does the phrase “Robots don’t count” ring any bells? It wouldn’t surprise me to hear Sweetheart’s dislike is rooted in previous work history and one or two instances of cleaning up after a super that got a commendation for the mess.
OK, I’ll bite. Why did they feel the need to strongarm a prisoner who was already cooperative and talking? And why did Sweetheart go from being skeptical to be a 3rd degree interrogator without any apparent rhyme or reason? o_O
Unity put him in a headlock, so Sweetheart decided to just roll with it. If you want to know why Unity put him in a headlock, my only answer is “it’s Unity”.
In fact, Sweetheart is accusing Shelby of being a “spy”, which isn’t exactly what he was being accused of yesterday. I suspect something may have ended up on the cutting room floor.
Working theory – missing strip in which Shelby continues with his reasonable-but-uninformative “There’s definitely something up with that guy, by which I mean me” schtick, and Sweetheart continues to insist it doesn’t make sense for him to be Mr Green, but decides it might make sense for him to be working for Mr Green.
I wonder if Nick was aware of his alter-ego. I imagine things could be a bit awkward between the two of them after that VR-porn conversation recounted in Nick’s blog.
@UrlanceWoolsbane, could you throw in a link to the “VR-porn conversation”? I’m having trouble finding it in the blogs of Nick’s that I know of, and I’d like to read that!
I assume Shelby was working deep undercover for AG-I and like most super secret agencies they operate on a need to know basis. So even though Nick knew Shelby already, when he got into AG-I they never told him Shelby was also in AG-I. Or they mind wiped him when he quit.
One of the above is almost certainly the case. I suspect the more likely is just that Nick simply wasn’t aware of/hadn’t met everyone in AGi. He may have only met those that he directly needed to deal with for work. It would actually be a pretty reasonable security protocol for AGi to avoid letting everyone in the organization know who everyone else was. Nick was also pretty new to AGi, so he may have had the lowest level security clearance.
Indeed! Virginia’s battlesuit was awesome, and would not have been in Nick’s cargo hold (nor would she have needed it) if it had not been for that useless “hero” known as Red Knight.
I’m sure Gavotte and the rest of her Machiavellian ilk appreciate them. Reporters got wind of your giant mecha project? They’re not going to wind up dead in a garage all by themselves…
Well, this would explain why he was at the safehouse tampering with the Jersey Devils. He was there to facilitate and/or observe the ethics and competency testing of Red Knight and Nick.
And Virginia and the Cobras just turned out to be a complication.
Shelby Silvers. Project Silvereye. The clue was in front of us the whole time!
(Tune: Try to Remember)
Nick won’t remember,
Shelby is a member,
Of his old team of superheroes.
Unity, don’t dismember,
This Mr September,
He is still working for your bureau.
Mr September’s,
Managed to engender.
Loss of Sweetheart’s temper,
And Jonah’s theories.
What chance that September.
For Green’s a contender?
They’re zero, zero, zero.
So, you work for the government. The government which we already know has been co-opted in various ways by A-sig, I think you need to work harder to establish your trustworthiness. (Of course, Skin Horse is in some ways in the same boat…)

Well, the Red Knight did kinda spoil it for the others.
Don’t forget that the others seem to tacitly approve or at least ignore, his overly murder prone methods of dealing with nonhumans.
OK, I’ll bite. Why did they feel the need to strongarm a prisoner who was already cooperative and talking? And why did Sweetheart go from being skeptical to be a 3rd degree interrogator without any apparent rhyme or reason? o_O

^ the correct answer.
Headlocks just happen.
Sweetheart also likes to make sure that everyone understands that she is in charge. She is establishing dominance.
He drank their last soda!
In fact, Sweetheart is accusing Shelby of being a “spy”, which isn’t exactly what he was being accused of yesterday. I suspect something may have ended up on the cutting room floor.

No words for Ex-Coworker, Nick?
I wonder if Nick was aware of his alter-ego. I imagine things could be a bit awkward between the two of them after that VR-porn conversation recounted in Nick’s blog.
Which blog? The most recent one I know about was the wordpress that ended once he met a nice gal in a nice helicopter.
@UrlanceWoolsbane, could you throw in a link to the “VR-porn conversation”? I’m having trouble finding it in the blogs of Nick’s that I know of, and I’d like to read that!
Besides “Not this SCHTICK again…”?
Nice wrongswear
I assume Shelby was working deep undercover for AG-I and like most super secret agencies they operate on a need to know basis. So even though Nick knew Shelby already, when he got into AG-I they never told him Shelby was also in AG-I. Or they mind wiped him when he quit.

Alternatively he just hadn’t met everyone *yet*
Do you know everyone in your office building?
Nick only know the ones who like to hang out or create dioramas on rooftops.
What have super heroes ever done for us? Hmmm?! Give us one example that they were a benefit to anyone in this series!
“Giving” Dr. Lee some *nice* armor/costume to wear?
Nick approves this message.
Indeed! Virginia’s battlesuit was awesome, and would not have been in Nick’s cargo hold (nor would she have needed it) if it had not been for that useless “hero” known as Red Knight.

SoraHjort: AG-I gave Nick a job when the Skin Horse thing fell through.
I wonder what they see in Shelby, though. Okay, he can talk to snakes, but that’s not all that impressive.
Is his super-hero name a reference to the earth wind and fire song September?
Well, September is one month ahead of October, and that puts him ahead of Mister October, Reggie Jackson…
Good thing Shelby remembered to put on his clean AI-G underwear this morning.
Confess! Or else we’ll use the Soft Cushions!
Or, if that does’t work, we’ll bring out the Comfy Chair!
And you will stay in the comfy chair until lunchtime — with only a cup of coffee at eleven!
Also, that rocket knight guy was a total tosspot to non-humans.
Shelby Silvers. Silver = Project Silvereye = AG-I. Nicely concealed spoiler, Shaenon and Jeff!
Well, this would explain why he was at the safehouse tampering with the Jersey Devils. He was there to facilitate and/or observe the ethics and competency testing of Red Knight and Nick.
And Virginia and the Cobras just turned out to be a complication.
Well Mister September, it appears you’ve overstayed your welcome. Seriously, it’s nearly Halloween.
The fact that he wears a AG-I suit doesn’t mean that he hasn’t just infiltrated them like he infiltrated Skin Horse before.
Shelby’s like “where’s my gratuitous Superman theme?!”
Shelby Silvers. Project Silvereye. The clue was in front of us the whole time!

“He was called Mr. September / That way we’d always remember / ‘Cause we found that day he was AG-I.”
I like Shelby’s look in panel 4. It clearly says that while he might be on their side, they might really not be on his.
So, you work for the government. The government which we already know has been co-opted in various ways by A-sig, I think you need to work harder to establish your trustworthiness. (Of course, Skin Horse is in some ways in the same boat…)
If he’s Mr. September, does that mean his powers include control over earth, wind, and fire?
What does A-Sig stand for again?
That’s Anasigma, the big bad organization run by Mr. Green.
