Yup. When the “Press to detonate” button now reads, “Press to RECEIVE DELICIOUS TREATS.”…..ya know you might not have thought things through quite as well as you shoulda.
I’ve been seeing lots of “do not press this button” references lately in comics/tv/books that I’ve been consuming. I even found a wall-lightswitch that is designed as a “big red button” on Thinkgeek.com.
I just need to come up w/ the perfect place to install such a button in the house where my wife won’t object.
I’m pretty sure Mendoza must be intact – I think Shaenon went thru too much foreshadowing for him to be a throwaway character This arc makes his third appearance after all. Thats similar to reason I expect we will be seeing Jonah/Nera again, too much time was spent on that arc – so i’m figuring we will see either them or the “Project Second Gate” machine again.
Sergio Mendoza is the guy who built the alternate-universe machine that Jonah got stuck in in the last storyarc. He’s the other Anasigma employee who came to look for Godot in this arc, along with Dr. Lee and Violet — the one who got drunk with Dr. Lee a few weeks ago. (He’s also old friends with Mell from Narbonic, but that hasn’t come up in this comic yet, except for a brief line where he mentioned knowing a very good lawyer.)
So in other words it’s not that Godot’s motivated by malice or up to anything heinous, it is merely that he has found a way to get job satisfaction out of doing as he was designed to do on behalf of a community of mad scientists and their minions. ^_^
Figure A blown into Slot B. Insert Wrenchie into Socket C and unloosen.

Great, now I’m probably going to have to troubleshoot that too…

There’s a large gap between “intact” and “throwaway character” in this comic. Mendoza may just be temporarily blown up.
I define intact as in not permanantly dead/disintegrated/etc. After all – we have the full spectrum from A.I.’s to revenants filling the cast…..
That is one elegant “kaboom.” If a gentleman simply must explode, he does so tastefully and discreetly.
Can you say “boom” boys and girls?
mnem
“I think we need bigger bombs.”
“And what makes you think we’d-”
UM, MOST OF HUMAN HISTORY?
Fact.
in other news, um… i forgot who is Mendoza again?
i hate names all characters should just be described as “the robot one” “the irradiators” ect.

So G.O.D.O.T.’s plan is to help us destroy ourselves.
With this crew, you’d think it would want more of a challenge.
The old but very effective:
Press to Test
Release to Denotate
Or as others spell it:
Detonate
Without the somewhat topical dyslexia.
tune: “Sh-boom,” The Chords, 1954
KABOOM! KABOOM!
Ya da da da da da ya da da da da
KABOOM! KABOOM!
Ya da da da da da ya da da da da
I’ll destroy you all
I have a simple plan
You’re heading for a fall
I’ll lend a helping hand
St. Charlie’ overthrown
You’ll do it on your own
KABOOM!
Goodbye, good riddance, too
I’m so superior to you
I can make you see
Whatever words I choose
It’s too easy for me
You mooks are born to lose
Yes, life will be a dream
When your sorry team is dead
Goodbye, good riddance, too
The world is better without you
KABOOM! KABOOM!
Ya da da da da da ya da da da da
KABOOM! KABOOM!
Ya da da da da da ya da da da da

See Fig. A carries with it hints of See Fig. 1 which tends to have a *slightly* different connotation.
“DEPRESS BUTTON FOR SELF-TEST”
~click~
“RELEASE TO DETONATE”
Uh-oh.
