The problem is H.T. does know where Renard’s been. He left his webmaster back with the turtles, living a quiet life. Running around after those little looneys probably built up muscle mass and made him tastier than the average humans.
All the convenience stores around here carry numerous flavours of beef jerky, which actually is still meat. It’s just been smoked and flavoured.
Slim Jims are kind of like the “hot dogs” of the jerky family. You never really know what kind of “meat” is in them, and they’re all ground up and stuffed into a tube, but when you eat them, you rationalize that they’re still enough like meat to be good for you.
It’s kind of like celery. It takes more energy to eat it than you actually get out of it, but it’s still considered good for you.
Why “come with us” rather than just eat him now? Does HT want him as an emergency snack, like the power bar you tuck into a pocket of your backpack and rediscover much later as a mass of crumbs and sadness?
Despite what he said, HT still needs both Renard’s political and financial acumen. If he joins the Collective willingly HT can safely allow him to keep some amount of autonomy, but if the Collective has to just eat him he’ll just become more plant matter.
Which means the Biomass is far more voracious than intelligent.
Quality independent brains like Renard’s are hard to come by under the best of circumstances.
And if protein is really the issue then beans will do just as well without the inefficient animal go-between.
HT, please don’t eat Renard. You don’t know where he’s been.

You’re not yourself HT. Have a Snickers instead.
I was going to suggest raiding that convenience store. There’s plenty of meat-based snacks in there.
I think Slim Jims are too attenuated from the original source to still count as meat.
Good news they want protein so as long as the slim Jim’s contain protein it doesn’t matter if it is meat or not

I have a sneaking suspicion H. T. is, right now, more “me” than “us.” How did things go down at the Carbondale Swamp Collective after Tip escaped?
That’s a very different meaning for “he just wants you for your body.”

Tortoises are vegetarian. “Tiger eaten by tortoises!” Has a nice headline ring to it, no?
I think the turtles like H. T. How much, and in what way, well…
It may depend on whether he brought them some lettuce.
Looks like H. T. is the lettuce.
If he didn’t bring any, yes, yes he is.
