When did the Kickstarter begin? I knew it was being prepped, but I wouldn’t have noticed it had gone live if casimir hadn’t commented on it.
The Kickstarter for Alexis Kennedy’s Cultist Simulator game got funded in its first 12 hours on Sep 1, and I’m sure that’s far from the fastest to hit its goal. (BTW, you should all go take a look at that too, but not until you’ve committed to more Narbonic.)
It was announced here on Sunday, but I’m not sure exactly when it officially went live. When I looked Monday morning, it was just over 95%. Now it’s over 125%.
As for the comparisons to how fast other projects hit their goals, that’s kind of meaningless unless their goal was the same dollar amount. (Actually, they’re kind of meaningless anyway, since the only thing that matters here is that Shaenon hit her goal.)
My theory is, he’s been in drag so long that dressing in a masculine style now counts as /double/ drag. There’s a power law in operation: Tip started out sexy, graduated to sexy squared when he started with the ladyclothes, and now he’s sexy cubed.
Actually, other than in a few memorable moments (i.e. the “Klingerpatra” costume), in the last few seasons of M*A*S*H Klinger stops wearing drag. (Which helps him get promoted to Sergeant.)
Around season 5, Jamie Farr decided he wanted Klinger to stop wearing women’s clothing because his kids were getting old enough to start wondering why their dad wore dresses. That’s why the scene in which Klinger sacrifices his entire wardrobe for the cause (ep 5.01) is so significant. Yes, he still wore dresses off and on during the next couple of seasons, but that was a big turning point.
And unlike Tip, Klinger only wore the dresses in a futile attempt to get a discharge. They weren’t a part of his very essence like they are for Tip.
They were more than just an attempt to get out though: when Col. Potter first arrives and forces him to wear a regular uniform, he has quite a reaction.
Well, yesterday Shadowmehr called for popcorn. I’m not sure how far in advance Shaenon draws these strips, but maybe she added popcorn to what she had.
Either that, or Shadowmehr is just prescient.
I miss a few days ducking a hurricane and come back to the best plot twist ever. When Tip first arrives in pants you wonder if they’ll listen to him bcs he’s a man but then he uses his sexuality even as a man. The brilliant irony of the story line reminds me of why I love Skin Horse so much.
The Harrison Bergeron reference worries me, as does the fact that no one else seems to be discussing it. It’s either ominous foreshadowing or a reference too geeky for THIS crowd. Either one is disturbing.
The question that U.N.I.T.Y. is asking is an important one…were the drag outfits Tip’s tools or his handicap? And if the latter, were they self-inflicted, or part of the programming he was given when he entered Skin Horse?
I was wondering whether anyone else would catch that. In context it’s worrisome. Re: Tip’s outfits – he wore them when he applied for the job, so I assume it’s just part of his personality.
The Harrison Bergman reference would worry me more if it wasn’t immediately followed by “No, that’s not what’s happening”. Of course, Unity isn’t necessarily right just because she spoke last, but Sweetheart seems to accept her logic.
The ladyclothes are the reason he was discharged from the Army. Although there’s always the possibility that someone with no name began conditioning him while he was in the Army, and precipitated his wearing the ladyclothes to begin with, ergo choreographing his discharge. So far, however, we can only assume he did so of his own free will.
“His C.O. in Kabul had sent him home with an honorable discharge and a recommendation for CIA training, and the CIA had passed his name along to a group of people who officially didn’t have names. Not important people necessarily, just people who did their work very very quietly. On the other hand it wasn’t like his superiors could do anything else. He wasn’t crazy and he wasn’t gay, so it was hard to get rid of him. This whole convoluted process was easier in terms of paperwork than just discharging him, and they’d wanted him out of the way ever since he’d started dressing well. Tip thought it was a shame that so few military personnel appreciated his sense of style, but he didn’t think seriously about getting rid of his wardrobe any more than he thought seriously about getting rid of his arms.”
Re: Vonnegut; It may be both ominous foreshadowing and too geeky for this crowd. And being only a short story and from 1961, it may also be too old for this crowd. And yes, it’s disturbing. If you see a woman waving a double-barrel 10 gauge, duck.
First, I giggled at your last sentence until I saw the comma. I’m still giggling at the image of a woman waving a double-barrel 10-gauge duck.
Second, pardon my ignorance, but what are you quoting in your middle paragraph (“His C.O. in Kabul … “)? Is it the filename story, which I’m way behind on, or some other source I’m not currently aware of?
Could be neither. It could be “we knew he was powerful, but this is just ridiculous”.
As for nobody mentioning it, maybe the ones who did recognise it assumed everybody else would too? I did spot it, but assumed somebody else would bring it up.
It’s simple: by dressing in drag for such an extended period of time, he was conserving yang, or ‘male’, energy by limiting his output to yin, ‘female’. It stands to reason that by now he has built up an ungodly store of yang energy. I would not be surprised if he could punch a hole through Mustachio by now.
He was a Captain in the Army who dragged three of his comrades out of a burning vehicle. He could have punched a hole through Moustachio a long time ago if that were his style.
I just gotta say. This is hilarious!
…and congrats on making your Kickstarter. Must be a new world record.
This is not going how I expected and I love it
Is anyone paying attention to anyone Dr Wilkin is saying at all?
Huh? What? ;-p
Oh, c’mon. He’s Shadow Government; if he actually says anything of substance, he’s not doing his job!
Sorry… were you paying attention to what you were saying?
I don’t anymore. After 64 years I bore me.
Nice catch! I didn’t notice BRGR’s word substitution until I read your reply.
“Did we just vote for something?”
“I’m not sure what it was, but man, I _seriously_ approved of it.”
Sorry, what were you saying, nyao? -_^

P.S. Love the Kurt Vonnegut reference!

Ah, I see; I usually skip Sunday pages…
Oh, man, you miss a lot of good artwork.
Well…if reacting to this doesn’t get Unity and Sweetheart together, I don’t know what will.
I thought they were already together really recently
Has Tip achieved Super Mojo Stage 2?!
Super Mario Mojo.
He’s over 9000!!!

Except with Tip, it’s not simply sexy “cubed”, it’s sexy to the power of ménage à trois.
I dunno… if this double drag thing worked, wouldn’t we have have noticed it with Corporal Klinger?

I love that Unity is eating popcorn.
I’d ask where she got it but that isn’t remotely the strangest part of this scenario.
popcorn just happens
Like Maletts
I have the original of that strip – a treasure!
I have a superhero character with this as a minor secondary superpower

I knew you’d say that. (Actually, you’re two minutes early posting the comment.)

Yeah, that’s the filename story.
I hadda look it up. Guess I don’t need any handicapping.

Can we please have computer wallpaper of Tip in full Bergeron/Sharon Stone mode?
Yes please
Where did she get the popcorn?
From Hammerspace, obviously. 😉
No, you wouldn’t want to keep it there. Gets the hammer hafts all buttery.

Punching can be hell on the manicure.
