As someone who has lived almost exclusively in the same house since I was born, I can assure you that if someone lives there long enough, they can tell you about shortcuts that don’t show up on any map. And they know about every single one that does show up on the map as well.
Assuming this someone bothers going outside of his usual routine. I have lived 20 years in the same village and never visited half of it because it wasn’t near the school or one of my friend’s houses.
If your usual routine doesn’t include some exploration, you’re really missing out. Every once in a while, you need to follow a path you’ve never been on, just to see where it goes.
