The alternate version of this strip matched the pig’s “Not even I know how to open this door” line with the Far Side “Midvale School for the Gifted” gag.
Since we’re also talking about singing, let’s add in some Pratchett:
“Questa maledetta porta si blocccccca,
Si blocca comunque diavolo lo faccccc-cio…!”
I know what I’m asking for if I manage to have enough money for the two-character* sketch level next Kickstarter!
(Probably Nick in the drone holding [generic handheld game system] instead of Nick in the drone in the dress, but I LOVE your idea.)
…and now I want to see a sketch of Tip doing a similar pinup-with-words-on-a-ribbon airplane painting pose, in period-accurate scant clothing. I’m going to need to sell a few kidneys before the next Kickstarter.
*I’m counting “Nicklet painting” and “actual Osprey Nick” as separate characters.
Know, know, know your quote
From the Whimsy flick!
Gussie and Mary and Whimsy-the-Fairy,
They know the secret trick!
OK, that was too easy, let’s try something a little more challenging …
(TUNE: “Joseph’s Coat” from Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Webber & Rice)
Nick Zerhakker, to the Little House he came,
They all called him “Princess”, to his manly shame!
Naughty word
From him they heard!
His language did appall!
He was down until the Wilkin said that he
Got so much respect from lovely Doctor Lee …
In a dress
That will impress,
He’s gonna save them all!
Piggie brings him to the Vault,
And then things come to a halt!
But when Nick the proper words is speaking,
Then the door swings open with a creaking!
Now the portal’s open wide,
Now they’ll see what lies inside!
Because Nick can quote a Whimsy movie!
Note by note, he’ll quote a Whimsy movie!
He’ll save Mary and Gussie and Gerald and Spritz
And Cunningham, Mistycorn, Glitter and Glitz,
And Fluffy and Cuddles and Mindy and Mork
And Bingo and Fleege and Drooper and Snork
And Jeffrey and Shaenon and Andrew and me and you!
A challenge! If you’re suggesting it’s impossible to filk my favorite Zionist waltz (and the only time I ever found Donny Osmond sexy) . . . well, you may be right. But I’m darned tootin’ gonna try!
tune: “Close Every Door,” Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, 1969
Open the door for me
I saw the film, you see
I know the code phrase:
“It’s okay. I’m here.”
When Mary and Gussie
Searched for the Golden Key
That is what they said,
So my path is clear
I pretend that I hate Whimsy
But I’ve seen ev’ry movie
And I hsve the answer key
In my meat brain
Open the door for me
I’m dressed all princessy
This child of Israel
Can do it alone
Just call me Princess Nick
‘Cause that’s not sick, it’s sick
For I’m kicking assets
In this Violet drone
[Whimsy creatures holding candles sing]
La la la la la la la la la la la la la, etc.
Open the door for me:
V-22 Osprey
I’m Nick the Chopper
And bad to the bone
Though I’m lovely and pure
In this dress and coiffure
I’m here on a mission,
And Whimsy I’ll pwn!
Perhaps it’s just me reading too much into things, but taking the Oz references and such from the series and applying them with the modern cast, it’s feeling more to me like Nick is, quite possibly, referencing Dorothy more than Tip.
What’s the betting this won’t be the only occasion that Nick’s encyclopedic knowledge of Whimsy media comes in useful? 🙂
Never mind the purity test and the physical workout, that is likely to be the real clincher of his success in the role of princess. Oh, and a high resistance to radiation will come in handy as well (unless, of course, the radiation’s high enough to interfere with the uplink)…
It occurs to me that the line in Panel 2 encapsulates this entire arc, as well as Nick’s personal growth. There are people who go their lives without meaning those same 4 words.
There’s something really touching about the look on Nick’s face in panel 2. He might be quoting, he might be using his meta knowledge to work the system, but at some level I think he really wants to be reassuring to whatever acts as the gatekeeper to the vault, and that he really wants everything to be OK because he is there to help.
That panel has made me mentally create all sorts of details about the Whimsy movies, and dammit now I actually want to see them.
I had something intelligent to say, then I forgot it ’cause it’s 12:04 AM. Maybe it’ll be back later, when I look at this at a reasonable hour.
I think it might have had something to do with the pig bouncing in panel three?

The Unicorn should understand that Nick is doing this for the most manly of reasons – to impress a girl.
Also Nick looks just adorable….
That is a nice dress and Nick looks good in it.
Oh god I never ever thought I would say a line like that.
I would kill to see that dress on the heli. ^^
What the heli really needs is a painting of the drone in the dress, like the WWII bombers with pinups.
And given the state of mad tech, I’m guessing we’re about to see a recording confirming Nick in the drone as the daughter.

AAAAARRGG!!!
Shaenon posted a spoiler for ‘Nick in a dress and a tiara’ two weeks ago, and I missed it 🙁

5th panel
*A curse on talented web-comic artists and their ability to put spoilers where I’ll find them too late*
Of course, Nick only watched that movie over and over so he could make fun of it more effectively, not because he liked it.

Huh! It’s hard to fit this into “Close Every Door”. (As in doesn’t fit.) I guess Webber has more originality than I’d been crediting him with.

I think sighthndman was just implying that Webber’s tunes are hard to tell apart, but whatever inspires such fine work is a good thing.
…and yet there is something just so right about it.
Nick so totally looks like Ozma in that dress.
And given that Ozma spend her childhood transformed into a boy, very appropriately. 🙂
Well, it ain’t quite “Speak Friend and enter” but it’ll do. 😀
Sounds like the seventh Doctor’s “Open up, it’s me!” line in Battlefield.
Ha! Nick pwned the Whimsy pig!

Okay, Startled Pig in panel 3 really is way, WAY too cute.
It occurs to me that the line in Panel 2 encapsulates this entire arc, as well as Nick’s personal growth. There are people who go their lives without meaning those same 4 words.
Manifesta included the line, “But I’ve seen ev’ry movie” in her outstanding filk, and it won’t let go of me.
(Tune: “Climb Every Mountain”, Oscar Hammerstein)
See every movie,
Hated or no.
Study all the action
Till each line you know.
Watch every cartoon;
Learn all the scenes.
Mem’rize every cue phrase
Till you’re in your teens.
A task will appear
When you never expect
That will need you to be
In a ball gown bedecked.
Wear the tiara
And every dress.
Untie every butt-bow (*)
Till you’re the princess.
A door at the back
Of the Star Chamber nears.
You’ll be ra-di-o-ac-
Tive for ten thousand years.
Fool every robot,
“Miss Collodi”.
Follow every cute pig
To your fusion pie.
(*) It seems that the Whimsy princesses don’t have these on their official attire, but that’s what it looks like on Nickolet.
Oh, that’s wonderful!
There’s something really touching about the look on Nick’s face in panel 2. Ah, the unwritten test.
To enter, you must speak with the spirit of Whimsey.
