Since Tip Wilkin is one of those guys who can walk hand in hand down Lover’s Lane alone…ya gotta wonder why he’s here at Skin-Horse and not working as a Hollywood actor.
Am I the only one interested in the fact that Nick actually gave a pretty legitimate reason for wanting Virginia along and that it was shot down for reasons unrelated to merit? Sweetheart could at leas offer to bring one of the radiation Sparks along? @_@
Incidentally, they’re not Sparks. Or as they said it, “We’re not Mad. We’re just irresponsible.”
I’d sooner bring Unity than either Chris or Marcie. Nothing against nuclear physics, but it’s a very limited field. And when Unity’s high on brains, she’s smarter than the rest of them combined. Sure, she’s rude, and downright scary, but she’s incredibly useful.
All the Tip hate is endlessly tiresome, especially when contrasted with Nick. So what if he’s a clotheshorse? At every major goalpost in his life Tip chose service to others, meanwhile Nick was sitting in a dark room playing videogames and watching action movies.
– Tip elected to join the military to serve his country.
– While on active duty, Tip risked his life to save other members of his unit.
– Tip elected enter a field of study dedicated to assisting and understanding others.
– Tip chose to join Skinhorse; an organization committed to social service
– Tip remained in Skinhorse even after it became obvious the work was dangerous and little appreciated.
– Of all the staff, Tip is the one Moustachio relied on to perform his daily winding.
Meanwhile we’ve rarely seen Nick be anything other than belligerent and self absorbed, sometimes drifting into mopey and self-pitying. His only former social circle were other online gamers, the only one of whom we’ve met Nick had an antagonistic relationship with. The only (from his perspective at the time) human he routinely had in-person dealings with was the Pizza guy. His most meaningful relationship is a creepy romance with the woman who didn’t think enough of him to get his consent (or even opinion) before scooping his brain from his body and dumping it in a tank.
I could sit down with Tip and have a beer or a coffee and have a pleasant enough conversation. Nick I’d want to punch in the face after five minutes.
The important difference between Nick and Tip is a simple one. “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn / Is just to love and be loved in return.” Tip *may* learn that someday. Nick is already there.
I think this is a pretty narrow-minded way of thinking—thinking that someone isn’t ‘complete’ unless they’re in a romantic relationship. I’d imagine asexual people would find it pretty offensive, and that idea has sexist roots.
Aw, I sympathize. Tip’s my favorite character! But, I also feel like, as self-absorbed and narcissistic as he can be, he doesn’t mind when people poke a little fun at him.
I think it’s quite funny how we separate work and family. Why shouldn’t they be together just because they want to be. I don’t think fuel is an issue. Ginny doesn’t have her own work that has to be done at HQ. Why shouldn’t she come along for fun? Also from a management point of view, it’s perks like this that keep people working for free.
“The hour sad I left a maid
A lingering farewell taking
Whose sighs and tears my steps delayed
I thought her heart was breaking
In hurried words her name I blessed
I breathed the vows that bind me
And to my heart in anguish pressed
The girl I left behind me.”

What a delightful turn of phrase. I promise not to steal it.
Well, I stole it from Jed Clampett, so feel free to steal it from me.
So they all automatically go along with the joke, Nice.

No, you make a good point.
Incidentally, they’re not Sparks. Or as they said it, “We’re not Mad. We’re just irresponsible.”

The main problem Sweetheart has with Nick’s reason to bring Virginy along is that it’s clearly an excuse.
Inseparable, insufferable, whatever.
Beat me to it

I don’t actually think he’s insufferable, it’s just a really easy joke.

I must agree that Sweetheart is being a bit of a petty PHB. After all, it’s not like she left Unity in charge.
Although Dr. Jones is one of the few people able to inflame Dr. Lee’s inferiority complex…
Tip represents that remark.
“The hour sad I left a maid
