The sequence suggests that Jonah saw ahead that Pan had a gun and deliberately provoked her into pulling it so she would think she had the upper hand all the while keeping the gun in or out of his mind as needed. His mental control is phenomenal.
Hang tight. This is just the moment when it looks like everything has turned against our hero. We’ll beat ’em on appeal. We’ll beat ’em in the sequel. We’ll hire a public relations firm.
Maybe Pan did read Jonah’s mind and is just lying that she didn’t know what was coming. It is a simple matter of plausible deniability to avoid tipping off the real enemy.
It can be lonely being a superhero, hoarding a lifetime’s worth of secrets with no one to tell. The most painful secret of all is that there is someone, who reciprocates her affections on such a deep level that he cannot even admit it to himself. Yes, she loves him — she has seen through too many others’ self-deceptions and has lost the ability to lie to herself. But to share her terrible and thrilling truths would put him in danger and destroy the future he thinks he wants. Such a risk is beyond consideration! Better that the man she loves should despise her! Man? Practically a boy! Yet from all he has seen of what is and is not, with wisdom and depth beyond the ken of ordinary humans — ordinary humans such as the one he thinks to be his soul mate.
Give Jonah ten years and he’ll fit that description.
Yikes. Are we seeing this backwards? We got a precog with a ridiculously intelligent and violent tech god. Are we sure Mel isn’t their kid, gone back in time? It could happen!
Now I’ve finally had a good long look at the Narbonic archives… Does Dapper Tip remind anyone else of Male Helen in their Sunday best suit, or is that just me?
Ah, pulling a gun on an unarmed person, taking them hostage and then ranting about “who has the power” is a series of actions associated with a type of superhuman, Panoptica. That type is not super_hero_.
Managing these rumors of an on-panel gun assault poses a challenge, maybe even a concern. What can we do to help? I am running out of ideas after receiving this response to our inquiries:
Dear sir:
Sauron, Saruman and Wormtongue PLC must regretfully decline your
custom. Following Miss Panopticon’s open rebellion, the Valar cursed her
to never again manifest a public image pleasing to the eye.
There is still hope of forcing the sea monster into binding arbitration if Pan can trick him or her into signing the AG-I terms of service.
A more reasonable explanation (though less fun) is that he saw that this plan, for some reason, lead to success, without full knowledge of the details.
In panel three his eyes are crossed. clearly struggling to NOT think about the sea monster. Indeed… to NOT think about not thinking about the sea monster.
In my mind, the sea monster is smirking right now. Justifiably so. He might not even _like_ the taste of humans, but might just make an exception in this case.
I think at this time that Pan might justifiably argue that she is a fantasy spy genre webcomic character rather than an anime character and that all those possibilities would therefore be out-of-genre. ^_^
Jonah is commendably polite, considering that she was pointing a gun vaguely at his head.
Well, he is used to dealing with Nera’s mother. If he doesn’t behave as a perfect gentleman — particularly around Nera — he could end up disappearing.
Kate’s pretty polite, too. “Cripes”?
Possibly a side-effect of superheroism?
I mean, she did refuse to shut off Nick’s swear filter back when he was with AG-I.
It was out of self defense that she refused to shut off Nick’s swear filter.

Having a gun pointed at you does tend to increase the respect with which you address the wielder.
Yeah, there’s the downside to the Jack Bauer technique, Panny…
Namely, that it doesn’t work at all.
Congratulations, Pan. By holding him at gunpoint, you yourself provided Jonah the means by which to deceive you.
..As predicted by him when he devised his master plan. ^_~

I’m reminded of Helen in Narbonic: Any sufficiently convoluted master plan is indistinguishable from insanity.
And any sufficiently subtle plan is indistinguishable from dumb luck. 🙂

“Our hero”? Just whose side are you on?

Intriguing.

I mean, now that you mention it…
I’m not seeing it, myself. The hair is all wrong, and male Helen was a lot taller.
“He” had a goatee as well, if I recall.
Broader too, as I recall. More obviously muscular.

It is sufficient that this course of action does not lead to imminent death.
In panel three his eyes are crossed. clearly struggling to NOT think about the sea monster. Indeed… to NOT think about not thinking about the sea monster.
And she would have gotten away with it if it hadn’t been for that darned sea monster!
And those meddling kids!
In my mind, the sea monster is smirking right now. Justifiably so. He might not even _like_ the taste of humans, but might just make an exception in this case.
Now, THIS is how you play The Game to win. (Do not try at home.)
I think we are all overlooking the fact that she is in the tentacles of something with tentacles… the possibilities are endless!

On the one hand, you have a point.
On the other hand, it’s a fantasy spy comic with a lot of sapient non-humans. So the line of demarcation between genres gets pretty blurry.
If I find a lemon about this scene on adultfanfiction.net later I know who to blame XD
Ah, the greatest weakness of a telepath.
Not actually having any useful thoughts.
