Wrong tack to take, easily argued that they’re not remotely ‘human’.
The proper argument is that a sapient is a -person-. If someone can accept that a friggin’ corporation can be a person, they can accept that actual creatures can be.
A “person” is defined as “a self-conscious or rational being”. So any being – organic or inorganic – self-aware enough to argue that it is a person, is, by definition, a person.
But “humans” are an actual species, and totally unrelated to rats except for the fact that they’re both mammals.
I’d disagree here. You can probably write a pretty convincing chatbot arguing that it is a person right now. Doesn’t make it a person, because it isn’t self-aware at all, it is just programmed to make one specific argument.
It is the chinese room problem. You can probably build a non-person device which indistinguishly fullfils any criteria for being a person you can come up with.
He is displaying personal growth, referring to “..that Valiant guy”. It’s likely Echo was the one who began thinking of Valiant as a person (rather than an objectified romantic ideal).
Really, it’s his fault for not having a fancy hat. Sure, you could argue that they have to use those colanders in order to connect to the drone, but he could have made some effort to gussy his up a little.
His hat lets him control a robot. That’s a pretty dang fancy hat.
She’s just unimpressed because she has one, too. But his hat is still fancier than Valiant’s!
Lol, looks like hat obsession with bloodlust is multiversal, not just with Jagermonsters. Yes I know that some people consider them the same universe.

You can’t really blame Echo Bravo for being a little perturbed. After all, he’s just been informed that he ranks somewhere lower than a rat.
I would think he’d be used to hearing that from everyone, though…
Doesn’t make it any less annoying to hear. Especially when it’s from someone you really didn’t want to hear it from.
Hot take: A sapient rat is basically a human. He’s just being a bigot.

Precisely.

That’s why I specifically said “self-aware enough to argue” rather than simply saying “able to argue”.
The Turing Test is a thing for a reason, and even that is a pretty low bar to clear which doesn’t prove personhood.
Simberto, I’m not sure “if we define personhood, things we didn’t originally consider people might pass it” is really that strong of an argument.
I mean, he’s still being a bigot no matter what you call them.
Not really. He’s not obliged to like it when the girl he is interested in seems into another guy no matter what species the other guy might be. @_@
My wife concurs on the importance of hats.
So long as Niue isn’t around.
That would be hilarious! Have Alfa and Niue become “new best friends” just as Echo shows up decked out in top hat and tails…
Now I want to see this happen in-strip.
“I’d tip my hat to you, but I haven’t got a hat.”
Any plan where you lose your hat is a bad plan.
What about plans that require a hat to function?
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!
Weren’t you in the cast of “The Producers?”
Jeez, when Echo Bravo is the voice of reason…
He is displaying personal growth, referring to “..that Valiant guy”. It’s likely Echo was the one who began thinking of Valiant as a person (rather than an objectified romantic ideal).
Yes, but now he’s thinking, “…fancy hat equals sexual tension. Got it!”
Really, it’s his fault for not having a fancy hat. Sure, you could argue that they have to use those colanders in order to connect to the drone, but he could have made some effort to gussy his up a little.
If this keeps up, I have a feeling she might go rogue and join everyone. xD I mean, his hat is fancy, for a rat.
His hat lets him control a robot. That’s a pretty dang fancy hat.
