I think it’s the way he’s using Shelby like a therapy puppet and not, y’know, actually noticing he’s talking?
Ironic that he was hired for Skin Horse because he could hear the talking dog, but he’s not actually *listening* to anyone anymore… Who needs a reality filter when your ego will do that for you? (Although he’s now a mojoician, so the line between reality filter and reality distortion field is a worrying one…)
Anyway, obviously Chris and Marcie are not going to be able to succeed without Tip going too, which may or may not be true but I’ll be pretty surprised if he doesn’t decide that before he is done this orientation, demonstration, training, or whatever it is he thinks he is doing.
“Trust me,I’m a Doctor!”
“Don’t mess with me, ‘the Man’, I’m a Psychologist…”
Something about Tip’s expression in panel 3 suggests he’s gone off the deep end.
Was there ever any doubt?
Granted, several things in the text suggest it as well.
Who says there can’t be mad social scientists?
Actually I think there may have been at least mention of one in Narbonic.
Yes–specifically, Mell, as pointed out in the fourth strip on this page.
…Although I suppose Dave calls her “evil” here, not “mad.” But still.
There are in Girl Genius. They seem relatively harmless, and talk about the potential of making towns into mazes, and cheese, and orphans.
And then you find out their hobby is driving people to suicide.
They don’t get much funding, either.
Curse those mad grant-writers!
Tip isn’t properly mad – he’s just eccentric.

Mojoician, I like that word
But I’d also like to point out that tigerlilly seems to bring out the worst in him in this regard.
Seems to me he’s definitely listening in panel 4, probably in panels 2-3, and likely in 1 as well.
Listening, as far as Tip is concerned, is only so that one can elucidate the point you want to make. What they have to say is … huh?
If Tip wasn’t at least borderline, I bet he’d be reality blind.
What? Just now? Tip has been swimming in the neritic zone for a while now. He may be inching closer to the abyssal plain though.
Accept genuine hassles only.
Artificial hassles are loaded with GMOs and trans-fatty acids.

Now, is Tip really this dumb, or is he trying to genuinely make a point here? Either way, he should have notified Shelby beforehand.
