That doesn’t actually rule out them being his design. Consider how Anasigma employs Virginia Lee (and presumably hundreds of other sane scientists) to reverse-engineer sane versions of mad-tech devices. There’s a reasonable chance that if the Luigi, Beni and Victor devices weren’t made by Collodi, they were based on something he did. Or the Navy just grabbed them when they offed Collodi.
IIRC, this strip comes closer than any other so far to the central idea behind Skin Horse: http://skin-horse.com/category/skin-horse/prologue/
I never would have guessed that Donald Trump would be so pivotal.
I can see the parallels between building a fusion powered amusement park for the purpose of improving human-nonhuman sentient relations and inventing matter teleportation for the purpose of improving shower curtain technology.
Ummm ….. are we still placing bets on who Dr Collodi’s daughter is?
Put me down for Dr. Lee.
Yes, I know, there are many reasons why Virginia can’t be Dr Collodi’s daughter … but isn’t that one of the points of Mad Science – to do the unreasonable?
Lack of edit strikes again… Ok, forget the AI. Forgot about the strip where it says it needs his daughter to save it. There’s actually an extremely good chance that the Daughter is actually a new character or at least isn’t one of our “mains”. Not 100% sure why so many people think it is. Actually, the AI already passed on the message that one would find her in the “most Delightful place on Earth”.
I was going to pick Whimsy Corp as the daughter. Except WC tells Unity to find the daughter.
We may already know the daughter’s name. Godot tells us “he built a little HOUSE to make his little daughter SMILE…” In the normal reading, he wanted to amuse his daughter. But Godot likes games with language and misdirection. You could also read it: Little House creates his daughter, named SMILE. I’m sure it’s a nice acronym.
Well, Nick is clearly Crow. Sweetheart is Tom, Tip is Mike (who looked stunning as Captain Janeway), and Unity is Gypsy.
Ah, you saw the MST3K parallel as well. I was thinking we should see the shadows of their heads over the bottom of the screen ^_^
Snarking on his fashion sense?
Huh. A rare instance of fusion weapons not helping in the Narvonicverse.
…much
So Luigi, Beni and Victor are Collodi’s creations? How did Gavotte know?
Don’t ask how Gavotte knows. Just assume that she does and you will almost always be right.
In retrospect, the naming of things probably should have given it away once we got into this Whimsy sequence.
Calling them fusion devices is ambiguous though. May not be our named trio because they were attributed to the USN as shown here: http://skin-horse.com/2009/todays-comic-101/

A little bee told her?
Those are fusion reactors, not fusion weapons. Not even remotely the same thing.
It’s hard to make fusion weapons cute.
That’s why the feeling of achievement is so profound when you succeed! ^_^
It would also explain the raisins…You can’t do a cute fusion pie without raisins.
I… I don’t want to live in a world where fusion weapons don’t help.
There, there, alurker…we still have Matter-Antimatter annihilation weapons….
What was that old quote? Oh, yes. “There are few problems that cannot be solved by ripping a hole in space-time.”
The tragic thing is, today he could’ve just borrowed some tau cannons from Anasigma. Coherent tau beams really do solve all problems.

An edit button, an edit button, my skin horse for an edit button….
This speech reminds me of Cave Johnson

So the fusion weapons are made from lemons?
We’re done here.
(TUNE: “Every Breath You Take”, The Police)
Everything I make
Makes my poor heart ache …
It’s all cheap and fake
Like MacArthur’s cake!
(All except for you!)
Little House I’d build,
And with love ’twas filled!
But it left me chilled,
Feeling unfulfilled!
(All except for you!)
To my dismay,
Now it’s in decay!
All is flat and grey …
Just like my toupée!
Now I hope that I
Help you know just why
Everyone should die
With a fusion pie!
(All except for you!)
Someone left the fusion pie out in the rain?
I don’t think that I can use it, ’cause it took so long to fuse it …
the big war everyone’s talking about… was fought with… fusion weapons?
Fought with, caused by, toe-may-toe, toe-mah-to. It’s just a matter of timing, really.

We’ve already seen both of Dr. Lee’s parents, during the flashback when she merged with Unity.
Ever hear of adoption?
How about the Whimsey corp AI that Nick was talking to in the sound truck….

For the record, my bet will remain on Imogene Frog. For no better reason then that it somehow seems right. ^_^
And here I thought his hair was the current fashion for bleaching only the top…but of course, this film was made some time ago…supposedly.

Oh hi, John Hammond from Jurassic Park. Didn’t expect to see you in this role.
So, I just finished a full on archive binge… And god dammit, I ended it on a cliffhanger.
There are worse things than a cliffhanger on a Tuesday; there are four days for a revelation. Of course, knowing our authors…
Wow, that first panel brought back memories…

My new theory is that the whole amusement park turns out to be a giant robot and walks away to escape destruction.
Written by Virginia Lee (Burton)?
Trust me Tip, you could do a lot worse for people with bad fake hair.
I meant Nick! Darn it!
