Sure, that’s Ginny’s stash. It’s not like there’s some sort of input valve on the brain tank that he could use for those occasions when everyone else is drinking. Noooo, that isn’t it at all.
So how did Tip ever actually succeed as a psychoanalyst? He seems to be absolutely awful at it – too awful even for the military to put up with.
Actually… his cast page entry makes no mention of him being a psychoanalyst. They talk about his own psychological profile making him a candidate for Project Skin Horse, but that’s it. For all we know, he was just some schmoe in the Army.
In fact, have we ever actually seen any proof that Tip has any training? He calls himself a psychologist when we first meet him… but a psychologist is not a psychiatrist. You have to be a trained and licensed medical doctor to be a psychiatrist. But any idiot can call themselves a psychologist, legally speaking.
So have we ever seen any indication that he’s not just some whackjob who simply THINKS he’s capable of solving other people’s problems, but actually has zero training or ability to do so?
Does he have a diploma? Does he have a license? Have we ever seen him interact with reputable professional colleagues? Is there any evidence whatsoever that this man is knows what he’s doing?
Or is he really just some random creep? Is he actually just some weirdo with inexplicable “mojo” powers which he uses to manipulate and even seduce people under the pretext of psychological treatment?
However fond he may be of his self-image as a healer of minds (not to mention his therapy puppets), in one of his more candid moments Tip identified himself as an experimental psychologist.
“Successful” is subjective. Despite being far too self-obsessed to be what anyone would call a “good” psychologist, he has had moments when he achieved the desired outcome. So he’s not a complete failure as a psychologist. And considering the unusual nature of most of his current clientele, that’s saying something.
As for his discharge from the military, that was done after he decided to begin dressing in women’s clothing, not because he was a lousy shrink. I’m not even certain he used his degree at all while in the military. He dragged three members of his squad out of a burning Humvee, so it would seem he was stationed in a combat zone. And he received an honorable discharge and recommendation for CIA training.
He does possess a doctorate in psychology, so yes, he is well trained. But he is also unmotivated.
From the filename story: “Tip had often wondered over the past few months exactly what uncommon skills he possessed. Military experience. Doctorate in psychology. Few close relatives — that was probably attractive from a security standpoint. He was smart, but he’d be the first to admit he hadn’t done much with his smarts since burning out in grad school. But maybe that was what they wanted: a bright person without ambition. Someone who would do a strange specialized job without complaint.”
But that’s clearly written as Tip’s own thoughts. He may be an unreliable source, and we might not be able to trust his word.
Is there any concrete evidence, anywhere in the comic, to suggest he isn’t just a charlatan who THINKS he’s a psychologist? Because for all we know, he could just be a high functioning delusional who manages to leverage his charisma into convincing people (including himself) that he’s something he’s not.
Basically, I’m questioning the existence of his credentials. Does he actually have a doctorate? If so, from where? Is he actually licensed as a clinical psychologist?
Or is he one of the countless “psychologists” in America who don’t actually have a degree (or who have a mail-order “degree” from a shady “college” or “university” that isn’t actually worth anything) and who can operate without a license so long as they don’t call themselves -clinical- psychologists?
There are an awful lot of jobs – many of them government positions – that you can get in this country without a license and with only the flimsiest of psychology degrees. You can work in crisis intervention units, psychiatric wards, mental health programs, drug and alcohol programs, victim’s rights agencies, youthful offender facilities, services related to eldercare, and a lot else besides.
It just strikes me that we have absolutely nothing except Tip’s word that leads us to believe he is what he says he is.
You’re really stretching. Maybe that’s just because you don’t like Tip. I wouldn’t hold that against you… he is a very dislikable guy.
Surely you can agree that just because some person is an excellent psychologist, that does not prove that they have any degree or license to support it. Some people are just natural-born therapists. By the same token, just because a person is a lousy psychologist, that does not mean that they do not have a degree or a license. Successfully completing the requirements for said degree does not in any way mean that the person is particularly suited for that field.
Tip has been referred to as “Dr. Wilkin” from the very beginning. Nevermind anyone else, surely the government officials who originally interviewed him for the job would not have called him “Doctor” if he did not possess the necessary degree. If he called himself “Doctor” without the proper credentials, they, of all people, would have called him out on it.
If Tip doesn’t shave one of these days soon, he’s going to start looking like an alpaca.
“It’s OK, Nick. Ginny won’t mind …”
Efogoto: Who said anything about Ginny minding?
It’s probably Ginny not minding that Nick minds the most.
Cone on, Nick. Tip is clearly more of a Vicuña
When he’s not being a Dik…
It’s all because Tip doesn’t do hats very well, buying them from the likes of the Susquehanna Hat Company.
Well, whatever you do, don’t ask Niue if she knows how to get there.
If that were true, then why did Nick ditch the Violet drone?
because he self-identifies as helicopter now
Nick was just using the drone temporarily.
Sure, that’s Ginny’s stash. It’s not like there’s some sort of input valve on the brain tank that he could use for those occasions when everyone else is drinking. Noooo, that isn’t it at all.
I’d think Nick would prefer straight, untainted alcohol, since he can’t taste or otherwise digest the stuff.

Not that this would be enough proof, but Sweatheart, the bureaucratic stickler for details, believes it.

So did Gavote.

I’m seriously doubting any other explanation is involved, as our authors have never given any clues that Tip is other than what he–and they–say he is.

“It’s okay, Nick- I’ve taken plenty of liberties with her already, and she’s never complained!” He’s been undiplomatic before, and recently…
