I don’t know what no starter means, also can’t remember A specific previous strip but I don’t think Sweetheart counts as rational, well there was the time that she was oblivious to her creator being a murderer, and the other time she started freaking out about being a bad dog, come to think of it I could probably name more.
Well first of all, weather machines make no sense with our earth science. And second, building them anyway is extremely suggestive of hypercognitive dementia.
A considerable time has passed since then. She likely picked them up along all her other clothes and stuff she had since escaping Annex One, likely even gone shopping.
Dunno for sure. Jonah Yu and Nera Vivaldi don’t work for them and probably only made money at, oh, what was it, one of their father’s convenience stores? Nick quit a job with Whimsey to come back to Skin-Horse. Moustachio might’ve blown all his salary on popcorn tins. Hitty is an intern, probably unpaid. Gavotte is probably independently wealthy. Chris and Marcie lived on a funding anomaly but it may have been restored. I don’t know everything about Dr. Lee, but in her last adventure at Anasigma I’m sure “you’re fired” must have been part of it.
That would leave Tip and Sweetheart and Unity as dependent on their paychecks. Can’t say about their expenses, except that Tip’s taste in clothes might run up a pretty big bill.
I am running on the assumption that in the process of going rouge, they prepared a large stash of emergency funds or otherwise tapping revenue sources Anasigma has not thought to check or outside their reach.
But that’s silly because it would assume that anyone in the cast could have competently foreseen and prepared for this scenario before it became an issue.
So I’ll go with artistic license “not important to the story” instead.
Gavotte has proven to be quite prescient. After all, she was the one collecting the fusion reactors “to power a giant robot”. So who can say what she may have done in the way of preparation for their financial needs?
Both Dr. Lee and Sweetheart were subjected to extended VR scenarios, during which they encountered Gavotte / Pavaine. Nick did the VR stint, but lacked contact with the bees.
It’s a corollary to the theory that Sweetheart is unaffected because she’s either used to having nightmares about Captain Bram coming for her or finds the idea comforting due to her messed up relationship with him.

“No starter” means that a wise man knows when to simply accept his partner’s little ways.
Nick is just telling Sweetheart succinctly that getting Virginia to admit the irrationality of any of her actions has zero probability of success.
Ironically that could probably be true about Sweetheart.
Non-starter, not no starter. Simply means something that won’t get you anywhere.
Exactly. I believe it was originally a figurative allusion to a car that won’t start. Comparable to an argument that “doesn’t have legs”.
I’m reminded of the Abomination.
I believe it’s origin comes from horseracing, referring to an animal that doesn’t even make it to the starting gate.
That would make sense, and would handily predate automobiles.
Either that or the prolonged stress both endure (anxiety and working for Anasigma) has made them resistant.
How is building a weather machine not rational?
I’m pretty sure I’d be building one if I had the technical competence for it.
Ditto. And the parts; must be a bitch to get the parts in their situation.
Well first of all, weather machines make no sense with our earth science. And second, building them anyway is extremely suggestive of hypercognitive dementia.
But yeah, just try telling HER that.
Tell that to the government men who used to do cloud-seeding.
Is it really insane when she lives in a world where she knows such machines have been built but also likely to have actually seen one work?
You can even send away for a weather-machine kit…
There are times when I wonder if she’s like Dave was, someone with latent mad science going on.
No, she’s the result of the experiments on Dave. He was just the prototype for what Anasigma created with Virginia.
She has the talent, but she’s been conditioned to prevent her from ever breaking through and having her “We’re all mad here,” moment.
She can do mad science, but other than some occasional helicopter humping, is mostly stable and controllable.
So where’d she get the sensible shoes? When she was picked up by Annex One, she was barefoot and wearing hospital pajamas.
Maybe she engineered them herself.
A considerable time has passed since then. She likely picked them up along all her other clothes and stuff she had since escaping Annex One, likely even gone shopping.
Who paid? Skin-Horse went rogue, and Dr. Lee left Anasigma. No salaries. Unless someone forgot to cancel their government / corporate credit cards…
Come to think of it, how’d Dr. Lee and Nick get those lattes? Queen Elena comping them?
They presumably have money. Nothing in the strip has made it look like they were living paycheck to paycheck.

this island has everything!
Both Dr. Lee and Sweetheart were subjected to extended VR scenarios, during which they encountered Gavotte / Pavaine. Nick did the VR stint, but lacked contact with the bees.
Alternative theory: she is so used to having nightmares about her parents coming for her and disapproving of her that she doesn’t even remember them.
I like this theory. It fits very well with her

Today’s strip is not showing on GoComics.
Well, it’s there now. Didn’t show up in my e-mail this morning, though.
Comes of hanging out with Tip.
Non-starter is originally a term from horse racing; for whatever reason, the horse did not start the race.
