Hmm, I hadn’t considered the possibility of Gavotte faking her condition. Probably because we learned about it from Moustachio and he seems to have known her for quite some time.
It’s still not necessarily Gavotte being stupid. Sweetheart asked the same kind of leading question based on her assumptions in panel 2. Gavotte may just still be playing dumb to throw off Sweetheart’s assumptions. I don’t think it’s so, but it is possible.
“Herself” would be correct, since she considers herself female, and she uses “I” when referring to herself, so she considers herself to be singular. Grammatically speaking, “herselves” is not a valid word.
I’m still not convinced that this was Gavotte’s intention, and that she might have reasonably expected them to work together to achieve their related tasks instead of setting fire to the building fighting over them.
Or perhaps she just wanted to give them both options and figured she could feel smug either way when she regained her senses.
It seems far too cleverly set up to be a series of unintentional consequences – especially given Gavotte’s repeated talent for thinking ten or more steps ahead.
If I had to guess, it was designed to keep them very occupied while Gavotte was in her vulnerable/reduced state. Why else offer a promotion to each person individually for tasks like scanning a report or providing good front-desk service?
It must be serious if she’s willing to set team members against each other, as that tends to have lasting consequences on the team and the building. I also find it highly unlikely that she would let such a critical point – crossing several story arcs – happen at the same time as the supersedure she would have seen coming a mile away.
So, the important question here is, where is the *rest* of Gavotte, and what is she doing behind everyone *else’s* backs that’s worth this kind of collateral damage? Besides hiding a sentient swamp or two, that is.
It’s not Gavotte’s style to work on anything directly. She moves pawns; she doesn’t move on the board herself unless it’s either nearing endgame or the king is in danger. Does Gavotte run Anasigma? Is she related to the entity that *does*? It would explain why nobody seems particularly upset about ex-Anasigma projects showing up to work for Skin Horse.
Odd … for some reason this didn’t post yesterday. (I was running late for work, maybe I hit the wrong button.) Anyway …

Now Sweetheart runs up to Gavotte in her office,
As far as most days go, today is the worst!
There’s fire in the basement and bugs in the hallway!
Gavotte says that she’s willing to help out, but first …
[CHORUS:]
Let me ask one thing … you’re a cute little doggie!
Now, aren’t you? Aren’t you? Admit you are!
Want to help you out, but I’m still a bit groggy …
If termites should catch you, I’ll say “Au revoir!”
Now Sweetheart’s retreating, she’s running and yelping!
A terrible, horrible, very bad day!
She hopes that her boss is forgiving and helping,
But first, Miss Gavotte has just on thing to say … [repeat CHORUS]
Ah! I had forgotten about Gavotte’s… condition..
The genius of Shannon: the bees are actually drawn to look stupid.

Seems like Gavotte’s new queen might be a fan of Mark Stanley’s Freefall
Can’t be, their hands aren’t in the ai… oh, dammit…
Hive intelligences aren’t ruled by the queen. You’d say her gestalt is a fan of Freefall (assuming it is indeed her).
No, Sweetheart. Technically it’s just one question repeated twice.
(Actually, that should be “repeated once”, since the second time it was asked counts as the first repeat of the original question.)
You beat me to it, as soon as read the last panel was going to say what you said 😛
Ed, I know brevity is the soul of wit, but …
This filk is brought to you by the Silent Monks.
This, along with the two snark replies, made me laugh almost as hard as filk master Eddurd’s regular postings!

Perhaps Gavotte can claim the bonus herself. (It is “herself,” isn’t it?)
I think in this case, we can reasonably use the term “herselves” without grammatical error.
“Herself” would be correct, since she considers herself female, and she uses “I” when referring to herself, so she considers herself to be singular. Grammatically speaking, “herselves” is not a valid word.

Ah, a fellow programmer I presume? When i was just a wee little code monkey, our unix-bearded elders taught us to always start counting from 0…
But the first was a statement. So really, it IS only one question.

Sorry, I like to speculate rampantly and vocally.
