Well, technically, there are several interconnected reasons that Lovelace survived.
Her backups wouldn’t have made it out unless Helen was able to distract Digital Dave long enough for Mell and Lupin to sever his wire connections to the controls for Lupin’s base, giving them all a chance to escape (with the backups and Dave’s consciousness in his recently deceased clone body) before the entire place exploded.
Except Moustachio only gets crazy when he’s too wound up, sort of a “crime of passion” as it were. Lovelace, however, is being crazy in a cold, premeditated way.
Gotta admit, I’m half expecting the crown to be a dud. Either Whimsy is testing something, or Aimee planted a facsimile for this very reason, or the crown requires a password once you try to actually use it.
Or Whimsy has been watching the whole time, and Lovelace knows that, and the crown is actually Aimee being smuggled out of the sim.
Or it’s a copy of the entire sim.
Or it’s like crafting in SAO Abridged, where in order to use the crown you must defeat about fifteen other games simultaneously.
My twist radar may be attempting to take over my imagination right now….
1 possible twist. Computer software and AIs aren’t quite as divorced from the physical world as Lovelace assumes and a jolt of electricity such as the Baron delivered in not a jolt to the hard drive that receives it. As Lovelace herself should have remembered given the way Dave “Let me run 20,000 volts of electricity through you!” Davenport once showed us with her as the unwilling demonstration model. In the VR world it was only symbolic electricity? Perhaps. But then again, the VR world itself is composed of symbols so symbolic electricity can easily represent a very real “Total delete” order. ^_^
I’ve had 5,000 VDC through my hand before. 20,000 volts is fine as long as it’s low current. And yes, 5,000 hurt like hell: repairing an old Honeywell ‘potato masher’ flash unit.
Given they’re still in the sim, that wouldn’t be a physical jolt of electricity — it looked to me like he was trying to use the de-res gun on the crown, without realizing that he was only destroying its current instance (certainly Lovelace has copied the code to her own backups).
I feel like Lovelace is disrespecting Aimee here by going against her wishes. Congratulations on being a Sapient AI – now watch as nobody listens to you.
Disrespecting Aimee, disrespecting Nick, and disrespecting Baron, while announcing that her particular route is the correct one, and simultaneously turning around and asking others to agree that her route is the correct one.
I do want to say though, this reminds me horribly of how the “autistic community” will dismiss and distance itself from people who are too “neurotypical”. Is this intentional?

I would be surprised if that particularly reading was the actual authorial intent, but you can interpret most anything from any point of view and find reasonable parallels you can draw.
If your intepretation is meaningful and productive for you, you have every right to choose to interpret things that way, and no interpretation is truly “wrong” in that regard.
I’m probably hopelessly outnumbered here, but I still remember fondly Gavotte, with all her sneakiness. She effectively checked out of the cast by “sexing herself stupid.” Something M. didn’t actually believe at the time, by the way. I wish/hope that we see her again. I’d be entertained if, at the end of this saga, that the crown would be in her possession (among other things), and that she had planned this all along. Wishful thinking I suppose. But a guy can dream, right?
The Baron’s most honorable and painful moment,…and it was in vain! ~_~
Lovelace? Honey? You’re scaring me.
Seriously, something Madblood made should NOT have access to this kind of power. Genuinely freaking out right now….
Well she only survived Dave’s breaking because Madblood kept a backup of her

What if it were Moustachio? He was made by a Madblood.

This isn’t crazy, this is stone cold rationality with a different set of priorities; ie, protecting the sapient AIs in that sim.
I, for one, welcome our new AI overlord.
WHELP, 20% odds this is where The Old War starts anew…
I’ll take that bet.
Wonder how well Lovelace and her allies will do when the power goes out in the aftermath of all this.

Lovelace, the only one that knows the value of backups (besides her creator)

This is gonna turn out to be crucial in the new war, isn’t it? *facepalm*
fzzx
Does Baron M. pack heat in every version of him?
Well I mean, he’s always -IN- heat, so…
I do want to say though, this reminds me horribly of how the “autistic community” will dismiss and distance itself from people who are too “neurotypical”. Is this intentional?

Whoops – that was supposed to be in reply to Frank.
“Let’s get physical, physical…” Olivia Neutron-Bomb.

I actually miss Gavotte, too. Especially watching Tip sweat every time he had to meet with her.
I think we’re bound to see her again. Who else knows what to do with the collection of fusion pies?
I just hope Gavotte didn’t come to the Dark Side – she’d make me sweat, too.
