Has Shaenon drawn Nick and Dr Lee as Shinji and Asuka from Evangelion? I feel like she might have, but I don’t remember, and I had a sudden mental image of the two them on the beach at the very end of The End of Evangelion.
You know, over the years we’ve seen a lot of Ozma/Dorothy (Tip), Toto (Sweetheart), the Scarecrow (Unity), the Tin Man (Nick), and even Tik Tok (Mustachio), but not that much of Leo the Cowardly Lion. Shaenon, Jeffrey, our esteemed authors, was he once planned to have a more important role?
I think Sweetheart also doubles as the Cowardly Lion – note this. And given that Toto is more of a mascot than a character, I think Cowardly Lion is her more important role. Though it does get confusing, same as how it’s kind of confusing for Ginny and Tip to both be Dorothy, and honestly Ginny doubles pretty well as the Wicked Witch of the East…
As you’ve noticed, it’s been demonstrated that the characters in Skin Horse can map to more than one character in Oz, and that more than one character in Skin Horse can map to a single character in Oz.
Leo is – in point of fact – a Cowardly Lion. He’s also one of the first two characters we were introduced to way back at the beginning. So it’s not unreasonable to wonder whether he was originally intended to be more prominent.
Since they are literally being attacked by fear itself, Sweetheart is providing a more concrete source of fear to focus on. I can’t decide if FDR would approve or not. Clearly Truman would be good with it.

Seconding this.
Now that’s the Canadian Battle Dog we all know and love!
I’m flashing back to Sweeheart intimidating the heck out of Leo in the very first chapter.
I know! I love this so much!
She’s so cute when she gets to go all Alpha on everyone!
Forget “Alpha” – she in full-on “Bitch” mode… which is what has Unity all excited.
Sweetheart: “Sit on our Nick, and put yourself above him.”
Leo: “I’ll sit on your Nick, I’ll stick to him like glue, too.”
Sweetheart: “There’s no need to apologize, when underneath he lies, it’s pretty okay.”
Unity: “Sit on our Nick, and let your butt embrace him.”
Leo: “I’ll sit on your Nick, and I’ll obey you truly.”
Sweetheart: “Life will be fine, keep the zombies in line, it’s kind of salacious but also audacious, okay…”
Nick: “Ow, my vertebrae!”
Sounds vaguely familiar… but not quite as crass as the original.

Management by Perkele! Good girl!
So long as they’re not hoarding, we’ll be fine
“Hey! The copter bathroom’s all out of TP!”
Unity’s so happy that Sweetheart’s finally ready to rampage!
One might say she’s head over heels.
Oops! Heel.
You win an Internet for that! 🙂

Perhaps Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman are rampaging with them.
The only thing we have to fear is zombie LBJ lifting Sweetheart by her ears.
Panel 2 only needs a single spelling change to become a deeply relevant political cartoon all by itself.
Huh, you got a point there.
Kudos to Sweetheart, but if Leo doesn’t move soon, Nick might just have to flip upside down to give his peripheral some breathing room.
There seems to be a coloring issue on Sweetheart’s right front leg in the first panel.
Let’s hope Leo doesn’t get gas when in terror like some people do.
